Wow! that was the fastest week ever. Had a wonderful visit with my niece (my brother's daughter) and learned some colorful German words and phrases! Spent time on the water at the lake, did some day trips....nice!

So, one of my sisters was in a bad situation when she was young and ended up putting her daughter up for adoption. It's 22 years later and she and her daughter have gotten in touch over the last year. They have visited, talked on the phone, email ..... BUT, her daughter is an ass! Seriously. She was raised to equate attention and affection in terms of tangibles. She expects my sister to buy her way into her life. My sister lives in upstate Maine with her husband and has never had another child.

Her daughter only calls if she wants my sister to provide something, never just to say hi or thank you for .... Last Christmas, her daughter emailed her a LIST of electronics she wanted, but never even sent a card! This is a 22 year old, not a 7 year old!

The point was driven home with my niece's visit. She went out of her way to purchase little thank you gifts for my sister and I (we each had her for a week), she called as soon as she got home (in Germany), and has already gotten her pictures posted online so we can see them. Normal courtesy.

Her daughter was up for the first weekend of the visit, got money from her adoptive family (supposedly for gas) some from her biological father (she is living with him at the moment) and asked for more from my sister. Later it was found that she ended up with about $500 total for a weekend trip from Mass to Maine. Talk about a profit!

I have met her twice now and she must get the vibe that I am not an easy mark, because even though she was supposedly so interested in her biological family, she has never initated a call, written to me via snail mail or email, never asked about my kids or anything along those lines.

My niece spent the entire week asking questions about our family (this is her first time in the USA since she was under a year old.) She wanted to know EVERYTHING. Pulled out pictures, devoured all the pictures on the walls, was interested in my kids....

I just don't understand it. I want to set my sister's kid straight, but it's not my place. sigh..........................

You may find one of two things about this girl, later on. Neither is bad:

    1) She grows out of it, after finding that she can't keep friends and gets no respect from most family, or

    2) She becomes a successful entrpreneur and makes a gazillion bucks (euro's, whatever). This is possible. My brother grabbed onto money as a baby and wouldn't let go. Today, his net worth far surpasses mine!

Don't give up on her. You don't need to straighten her out - the world will do that. If she's nice otherwise, just enjoy her (and keep your wallet hidden...).
