11 days and no word

I did send my adviser the file/work I've been working on recently. Here's something very, very frustrating. I sent him that file 11 days ago and I haven't heard anything from him. I get that he has other priorities - he's in London working on a grant or grant proposal with colleagues. I get that he is balancing being an adviser, a head of a department, working with all sorts of people in all sorts of fields, trying to publish, all while being a father and husband. That said, I'm getting a little tired of feeling like I'm completely at the bottom of his priority list.

You would think that when you enter into a working agreement, such as an adviser/advisee relationship, both sides do so committing to do at least a bare minimum of expectations. Well, I feel that I've kept up my end of the bargain - I've met with him every week (he's shown up late and interrupted for phone calls and emails repeatedly), I've progressed forward (he's forgotten what we're talking about), I've emailed him repeatedly about progress and questions (he's consistently been unresponsive). I would like to say that if I wasn't a 6th year, I would do it differently and pick a different person. Truth is, I probably wouldn't. I love my project and I adore the area I've chosen to work in - I really believe in it's power. This is phenomenally unique and wonderful.

Still, I find myself a 6th year and frustrated that no matter how hard I work, I feel as if I cannot progress any further than my adviser's lack of attentiveness. In reality, research is personally driven, so at least I'm pushing it and myself forward. If I had a chance to go back, I would not change my adviser, I would, instead, change our relationship. I would work at being more pushy and forthright and honest with my progression. Maybe it isn't too late, but maybe it is. All I know is that I'm a 6th year - with $3,000 on my head every semester from now on, I'm feeling the pressure to finish and finish soon. Yet, despite that, my adviser hasn't responded to me in 11 days. 6 more days of him in London - after that, maybe there will be some communication.

Maybe you should be more assertive and not wait around for your adviser to make a comment about your paper?
