I've never been nervous about my job before

Posted 11-13-2008 at 03:35 PM by little elmer

Here at the GM dealership I work, I’ve enjoyed 9 years of steady – if not mediocre paying – work. A stable, family-owned company with many years in the business, it’s considered one of the best in our area for stability.

Now this.

I always thought that those employed in financial or technology sectors were willingly exposing themselves to the ups and downs of the economy; nothing against them, but that’s where the money’s going, right? At least to the common Joe in manufacturing, all this Wall St. stuff was for the educated “elite”.

But this crisis has reached further down the ladder than just a once-a-decade recession. Most everyone I know would suffer if the auto industry imploded, and to think this is due to years of management doing things the same way, while the piper was coming around the corner to collect.

I need new shirts for work, but I’m just getting one a week – one, because money’s tight and – two, my supervisor agreed to give me warning if the axe was coming for either of us.

Elm, I really do think the Auto industry is the backbone of employment in this country..It employs hundreds of thousands from the plants right down to the used car salesmen and the Auto center at Walmart..I think we should bail them out before th giant AIG and their greedy executives that also include FannieMae and others..

I understand the credit machine must keep rolling, so Fannie, Freddy and AIG would get theirs; but manufacturing has been kicked to the curb in this nation in place of financial institutions - both must be kept afloat during this period of ""correction".

"Correction" because some very wrong things must be made right if we're to get out of this. Compensation has gotten totally out of whack, even for the factory worker.

Well, a loan 'till payday. Maybe they'll right the ship between now and March 31st.

Under a restructuring plan, many dealers (maybe as many as half) would be closed; I think we're in good shape. The closest Chevrolet dealer to us is only 8 miles away (too close), but they're rumored to be closing at the end of the year anyway.

    Weird times we're living in.

Well, dealers around us are cutting personel (firing), but to our credit we are in good standing with GM and have not done so ourselves.

GM has already stated that they will reduce their dealer count from ~6,400 to ~4,700. When I asked our general manager about what this would mean to us, he said that of those - the Hummers, Saturns, and Saabs of the world would be going away anyway; the next line of dealers to go would be those who are not in good standing with GM - meaning they have not complied with the mandates GM has set forth in floorplans, CSI and other performance ratings, sufficient resources, etc. - of which we are in good shape.

    So who knows?

    Still holding...

The letters have gone to GM dealers; but instead of making them public like Chrysler did, GM (Government Motors) is letting the dealer decide to disclose the information. They're afraid of losing business and employees no doubt.

That's great, except the dealer I work for has told us nothing - nada, zilch - after 3 days, and we don't think that's a good sign.
