The wooden porch swing..Another Blue Blog
We live an easy, laid back life here in the mountains of East Kentucky..Our front porches are very important to us..If we are fortunate enough to have a covered porch we are doubly blest, because not only do we have shade from the hot noonday sun, but we have a place to hang the wooden swing...
The wooden swing is an essential part of our favorite pasttime..Watchin the kids and dogs playing, and keeping an eye on the road to see where the neighbors are off to..
The swing is quiet spot in the early morning to sit with a fresh cup of coffee and watch the colors of the sunrise above the mountains on the East side, and a place to relax with a tall glass of sweet tea in the heat of the afternoon while we rest and enjoy the hollyhocks by the mailbox and the ivy that is covering the old brick wall out front..
In the evening, when the supper dishes are done and the day is melting into night, the swing is where we sit and watch the grandchildren play the games of our own youth..Tag, statue, hide and seek, red rover..games that many city children have never enjoyed..
Just before I turn in for the night, I sit alone on the wooden swing and look at the starry sky and hear the night sounds of crickets and owls and sometimes and the sounds of other wildlife in the mountains..I talk to God then and thank him for all the simple and most meaningful blessings that He has given me this day..I feel peace, and contentment flow over me and soon I am ready for the comfort of my bed and sleep..

I love it! I love your swing! I think I'd like to be there too....
Is it the kind of place where if a strange car rides by, you know it is not one of your neighbors.......I've heard that said in remote, country locations.
I love your words, and I love that wooden porch swing!Posted 06-18-2008 at 06:25 PM by Summering -

Reminds me....
Your blogs are reminiscent to me of a columnist named Ann Melvin who used to write for the Dallas Morning News. I always loved her pieces!Posted 06-19-2008 at 10:49 AM by kaykay -

...And when you sit on that swing some night, think of your old friend June, who'd love nothing more than to be able to be sitting there next to you, and having a good long conversation with you. --Or perhaps just listening to the silence along with you.

Great writing and made a super good read. My grandmother had a covered porch with a swing. She blessed x 3 because it was screened to keep the sketters at bay.

blue, if you ever get up my way, you're welcome to come and sit on my front porch swing and watch the sun sets in these Appalachian Mountains with my wife and me anytime and enjoy the night sounds.

Thank You so much; you have a way of reminding me of that which is important and you jog my memory and mine such pleasant recollections. "Red Rover Red Rover send Blue62 Right Over" We had a swing out on the "veranda" at the parsonage where I spent some of the happiest days of my childhood.
The "potato peeling porch" was off the "kitchen el" on our old farm house between the main house and the barn.....it was a place to sit on the old wooden kitchen chair and peel veggies, snap beans or shell peas. The "veranda" was on the front of the house and had a swing and/or some aluminum rocking chairs.....it was where you sat when work was done....and could smile and nod at passers by.Posted 09-24-2008 at 06:14 AM by elston

Thanks, blue for sharing. My family had a porch swing and I remember staring up at the stars at night while swinging on it. This brought back memories. God bless.

I loved sitting on a porch firh fanily and friends. Growing up on a dirt road we did that a lot. Now the road is a main highway and we have to keep all the windows closed to talk in the house. No more sitting in the yard or on the porch. I love the good ole days. I have no brothers or sisters or parents living who enjoyed it with me then,
