Our First Day Together

Posted 09-03-2009 at 05:50 PM by LookinForMayberry

Poor MRS1885 and her DH were running late to their date in Chicago, so we didn't get a chance to do much more than say hello. "Here he is -- he needs a bath BAD, gotta go." God love her.

(The folks in Chicago had made an impossibly egregious demand that she be there by four o'clock. I don't know yet if she made it, or is now stuck with forty more homeless dogs.) I hope she made it, and is now resting up in a quiet room with a nice glass of something cold and refreshing.

As for Bigun, he was tired from the long trip, as dirty as MRS1885 warned me. We'd brought along some food and water, and put his new halter and lead on him immediately. He didn't much care for that, but was so taken with the water that he didn't object too much. He was so hungry that the first two lessons: "Come" and "Sit" -- with food as encouragement, were performed flawlessly. What surprised me was that now he sits on command!

That was only the first surprise. Later, as we haltingly walked on the lead, he continued to come along for food. But after he'd eaten his first small meal, he trotted alongside me like he'd been doing it all his life.

Later, after baths, flea treatments, and a few more walks (during which he's learning the "Potty" and "Business" terms), he surprised me again, by fetching toys. He did it about five times, and would've continued, but I didn't want him to get tired of it. What a smart dog.

He cried a bit at his first few minutes in the crate, but quickly responded to the "Quiet" command. It was just a trial to see what he'd do, and he didn't hesitate a bit to go back in later, when I sprinkled some more food in his bowl. Later, he laid in there with the door open, chewing on a stuffed toy.

What a smart dog this is, and such a good boy. I hope his litter mates have found good homes, because they are going to be great dogs, if they are at all like Bigun.
