Sloth -- Another Deadly Sin

Posted 08-22-2009 at 07:30 AM by LookinForMayberry

On the 15th, I posted to this blog on the topic of "It Just Doesn't Matter." I was wrong. I seem to find I am wrong about so many things, it shouldn't bother me. Quite possibly, it's God's way of teaching me humility:

"See, Deb, you were wrong about this, too."

This morning I listened to Rev. Adam Hamilton's podcast (given June 7th), on the sin of Sloth. I'd started to roll over that one to another selection -- like Envy. After all, I'm neat and tidy, so Sloth couldn't possibly refer to ME.

Wrong.

Sloth as defined by the good Reverend applies to the sins of omission, like when we see something that needs to be done and decide that someone else will do it.

Keeping in mind my lessons from the Mirror (previous post), I chose not to look at what others are not doing, and thought about the things I've seen that I've avoided.

Homelessness has always disturbed me. It seems to go against the grain of our proclamation of being a Christian nation. How can we let people go homeless -- and tell ourselves it's their own choosing? If you've read my posts about Health Care Reform, you KNOW I support that, but isn't having shelter even MORE important than health care?

The growing prison populations have also been a long-time concern for me, yet I've never done a thing to see what I could do.

Speaking of growing populations, just thinking about what I've learned about growing populations of unwanted animals in shelters just sickens me to my soul.

I could go on, reviewing all the country's problems, but that's not the point. The POINT is WHAT CAN I DO?

First, I can go back and check out that sermon, again, and make a list. I seem to do my best work with a list.

Then I can seek guidance from God, mindfully.

I know the answers will come when I just start paying attention to the day-to-day events, and be vigilant for my next slothful act. There will be a message there.

God give me the strength to ACT on it.
