Mostly RV stories from the road, starting in June.
But first, you'll see how difficult it is just trying to get ready and actually leave home for a few months!

Taos: the warning

Posted 07-03-2009 at 05:43 PM by anomoly

Well, 'my people' are coming home tomorrow. I've been very excited, but in speaking with 'their helping hand', Luke, he says not to rely on them to much, or hold them to their word. ..in other words, they sound flaky.
So, now I'm a bit leary of staying much longer. It may be nothing, but I'm anticipating uneasiness. Luke says to prepare to be put to work, alot of work. I'm not afraid of work, but I am afraid of alot of demands. And my 2 cats might be a problem with their cat (they, well, Charles, is pretty finicky about their cat, worrying about it being out after dark, etc, while I let my cats out at will, and couldn't imagine them being kept inside).
I think I should plan to stay a week or so once they get home. But, who knows if any of this will even pan out?!
I have no idea where I'll go from here. I need to see if DancingEarth is back home in Santa Fe, and I'd love to go there for a bit.
Truth is, I'm just scrambling.. I'd love to go home, but can't go back to Yuma until the heat eases off in September. That's 2 months to kill.
It's not been an easy trip. I constantly worry about something going wrong (mechanical, financial, etc.) Even my dish sattelite was set up on a much bigger stand than I had before, and I'm irritated that I have to worry about whether I can get it in and out of my car or camper. If not, I have to take it apart each time I move --and I usually move alot! I'm just tired of the stress, and the feeling of walking on a tightrope..

Hey, lighten up sounds like 'worrying' is having its usual result with you (as it does with me DAILY... many times / day / night )

Hopefully you can do the Santa Fe thing then head on up to Colorado.

You can always do 'couch surfing or join the 'evergreen travel club' or affordable travel for cheap and fun stays.

I'd venture out to some farm communities in SE Colo for a change of pace and to get produce and maybe a job for a few days. (And to avoid tourists)

See some nice parts of Colo on your way through (maybe doing some 'workamping')
(I have way too many favorite spots in CO, have grown up near Estes Park) I do like Buena Vista to Aspen (Independence Pass). + Glenwood Springs, Winter Park, Grand Lake, Trail Ridge road...

Then into Wy. (I like the snowy range between Laramie and Saratogo Hot Springs. (Free 'Hobo' Pool)). You can get there from Ft Collins, up the Poudre to Walden, then stop at Encampment, WY (Nice reconstructed village, VERY small town). There is Usually free camping in city parks in WY. Or use this site Free Campgrounds for RVs

You can venture from Snowy Range up Sherman Pass (I-80 towards Cheyenne) then go to Vee-dau-woo Vedauwoo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia There i a nice campground, or you can drive about 1/2 mile up the road and 'be a squatter'. It is very pretty during the mornings and evenings, especially nice to lay on a hot rock and watch the stars. (Aug Meteor showers )

Then I would head cross country WY to the Black Hills (SD) maybe through Wheatland, to Ft Laramie. Be sure to stop by the 'Lusk Plunge' (Swimming pool in city park). It is a good place to cool off, and camp for free. Then on to Hot Springs, SD and to the Wind Caves, and on up to Custer State park (Very nice). up through the Black Hills, then on over to Devils Tower, Wy. From there I would Bee-line to Buffalo / Story (for a good steak) + rich history lesson. get a good look at Sheridan, WY, it is a nice community. Then up and across 14 and 14a (Burgess Jct, my most favorite place), actually on up 14a from Burgess to HUGE grassy meadows with meandering streams and sheepherders fly fishing.

I would make it a point to drive the 'Beartooth Highway', NE enterance to Yellowsone, from Red lodge, MT (probably the most spectacular route in USA), then meander though Yellowstone and south into the Tetons (very nice place for canoeing / kayak... find a 'partner ') This is a MUST DO (float trip on the Snake River through the Tetons) It was my BEST beautiful vacation experience.

I would then go through the Star Valley (Afton, WY) then over to Soda Springs, ID, and possibly Bear Lake, ID / UT) or... on north west through ID.... too be continued, based on your timing... as you can go on south though UT and see the great parks, and on to AZ. (Be sure to see the Valley of Fire if north of LV, it has really nice camping and Petroglyphs) Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada
Nevada Division of State Parks - Valley of Fire State Park

Anyway... wish I were in your spot, than in my spot!!! (not a good summer, too much worrying )
