People who help!

Posted 08-12-2008 at 10:27 PM by DOUBLE H

A little over a year ago Bryant Gumbel of HBO had a great 20 minute special on the NFL disability issue on his program Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel. It is good that some past and present NFL players are stepping up to the plate. One was Troy Aikman of Fox Sports and formerly of the Dallas Cowboys. One of his Super Bowl rings was auctioned off on e-bay with the proceeds going to a fund to help disabled players. Another one is a current player-Kyle Turley of the Kansas City Chiefs. In one of the games last season he donated one of his game checks (don't know the exact figures but it was in 6 figures, trust me), to the fund. In an age of self promotion, ultimate greed, and general boneheaded behavior, it is good to know some guys out there care about the men who paved the way for them to make big money playing a kids game. The NFL disability issue is a huge disgrace and I applaud guys like Aikman and Turley for wanting to help!

I played a few years of volleyball and I would probably need surgery on both knees just to be able to jump again to play the sport.

My solution, stop playing volleyball. I can't imagine what these guys have to endure just walking around when they get older.

The idea of helping the elders who were much less privegedged than some of them are nowadays seems like a great cause. It's obvious that some of the most successful players in the NFL aren't as talented in the business sense, but some are. It's good to see those who are help out. It's not a matter of whether to give or not, but how and when to give, I think.
