Exposed Part 11

Posted 08-06-2008 at 05:19 PM by Pam& Bill

It is hard to believe that it has been 6 days since we moved from Tn. to NC.It has been an adjustment for Bill and I and also the friends we moved in with.

To give you the adjustment level we're talking here, think of the Odd Couple. Bill and I are Oscar, our friends are Felix. Out of necessity due to our disabilities our standards have slipped or rather relaxed in the past 3 years. With us, something is always laying around waiting to be put away at a later time when one of us has the energy. We no longer operate at the speed of "we need it yesterday. Theres a good chance that we don't even know what yesterday was! So we have some adjusting to do living here.

But on the bright side, living on top of Bee Branch Mountain, makes me feel like I'm living Thoreau's Walden with all of the nature and wildlife up here. I actually have an understanding of what fascinated him with giving up civilized society, to live and write at Walden in a small cabin he built.

The Bees are plentiful here and they are territorial and chase the Hummingbirds away from their feeders. There is always at least one Hummingbird buzzing and chirping at a Hibiscus flower near where I sit to watch. For such marvelous little creatures, they sure do make enough noise!
Then there are tons of Butterflies, the species I haven't yet looked up to see what they all are. There is the resident Turkey who appears every morning and has an entire ritual he performs. There is also the new mother doe and her little fawn. Then there is the half grown male bear that is in the driveway every evening, on a bend in the driveway just down from the house.

Bill misses all the appearances as he is sleeping. He is fascinated with the view. There is Black Mountain, The Blue Ridge Mountains and the third range is I believe the Applachians. They all converge in front of the house and the view always changes, whether it is the haze or the clouds looking like puffy white claws wisping over the mountains. It is a beautiful sight to see on a daily basis and Bill and I feel lucky to be able to experience it.

Well we feel lucky to be able to experience it together. We still get lost in the driveway, we always take a wrong turn and end up at a spot where the road stops, which is a super indication we took a wrong turn and have back out of the road. But we are learning, and Bill is getting used to climbing the curvy mountain roads around here. For a guy used to driving flat roads in Mississippi, he does really well. Except when I tell him take a right. I have no sense of direction at all. I'm the type that can get lost in a paper bag. Sometimes he doesn't listen to me and we pull up to the house and he tells me "Oh No! We're lost!" I tell him he drives me nuts, he tells me it is a short trip.

Pam, Oh what peace one can feel just from reading your descriptive statements detailing nature at its best. I'm hoping you and Bill are taking one day at a time and soaking in all that peace and quiet. You've had told us that you are enjoying each other's company and that should bring instant joy into your lives.

That direction thing--happens in all families--I'm convinced!

Pam, It sounds like this mountain top living is a good way to heal what you and Bill are experiencing right now with Bills diagnosis. The peacefulness of the mountain and wildlife lets you know that in todays hectic world there is still time to slow down and smell the flowers. I hope that everything goes alright and that Bill can overcome this.

I envy the view that you describe!

I've hear mountain living can get in your blood. I can see why. Watching nature unfold and reveal itself anew each day has got to be almost spiritual. Sharing coffee at the beginning of the day and wine at the end while watching the mountains will be memories to treasures...
