Cumberland Maryland was at one time one of the most beautiful places to call home. The historic ambiance of historic downtown was a wonderful place from sight seeing, antique shopping or dining outside with friends on the mall while listing to a local band perform. While growing up there I remember all the fun I had from school activities to the exciting summertime that awaited everyone after school let out that the fairgrounds would open or the pool at Constitution Park. Those were the great days when young adults never worried so much. There was no need to. The crime wasn’t as bad as it is today but again where isn’t crime bad?
Cumberland had a lot props at one time. The schools system had to be one of the best as I can remember. I had a wonderful education that my parents whom also attended the same high schools, did as well. Jobs were easy to come by as my father move my mother and I there before I was old enough to start grade school. Both of my parents were from the area but as the natives always said, “ If you’re from Cumberland and you leave, you’ll eventually move back”.
The idea of leaving your doors unlocked was never questioned. Residents in the area kept in eye out when you were out of town. The word “Murder” or “Assault” were only heard of east of Frederick near Baltimore. Neighbors cared and were considered family and kids in the neighborhoods never had to worry about their bikes being stolen or paying attention to what streets they weren’t allowed on. As far back I can remember the only thing I had to worry about was to have my homework done and be in the house before the streetlights came on.

It was never like this before. As I continued to talk with my husband we decided that once we had children we would have to leave Cumberland for them to have a proper education. At the same time we knew that it would be harder for us to have children and continue to live in the same environment. We knew that if we did we would be stuck in this town forever. I confided in my girlfriends about our concern and they agreed that they would also leave if they could get out. My husband and I worked more hours and refused to pay our gas bill. To make a long story short we had the money to leave and we did.
My husband and I moved to Charlotte NC. My husband was finally able to use his college degree in business. He couldn’t do it Cumberland, as there wasn’t any jobs for it. My pay increased triple and his pay increased X’s 4. I carry the same job as I did in Cumberland and he was moved up in his profession and we made just under 90K this past year. Not one problem has happened in our community. The little 1200 sq ft colonial home we rented that cost us $700 per month was a joke looking back. We pay $260 more on a mortgage payment for a 3,800 sq ft home in a country club on the golf course 20 minutes from downtown Charlotte in the suburbs. As of now my girlfriends whom I confided in no longer live in Cumberland and are pleased with the decision they made after leaving. My parents are retiring in two years and are willing to sell their house in which they have lived in for 30 years to get the hell out now before it gets worse. I keep trying to convince other family members and friends to do the same. There is a world out there besides Cumberland and it’s a great one with better opportunities.
