Lake Norman Thunderstorms

Posted 05-15-2009 at 06:10 PM by wiseman1

Summer is here, which means thunderstorms and high winds. Prepare your home for these dangerous weather systems before disaster strikes. Protect your home from storms, high winds and the damage they can impact upon your Lake Norman home with regular inspections and needed maintenance.

The shingles on your roof are susceptible to damage from the high winds that accompany our Lake Norman storms; regular inspections every 5 years should reveal any needed roof repairs. Water damage is equally as devastating as fire; prepare your home now to avoid extensive damage in the future.

Your windows should be able to easily withstand the pressures from our storms, but if your home is over 20 years old, have an expert inspect them for strength and durability. Upgrading your windows before storm damage is much more pleasant than after.

The landscaping on your property also needs to be addressed. Older homes tend to have larger trees with branches that can cause significant damage to a home, deck, dock or pier. Some of the larger storm systems we experience around the Lake Norman shoreline can easily send tree tops or branches through your roof, windows, causing major damage to your property.

Contact a professional landscaper, (North Carolina State University has a phenomenal horticulture curriculum, so there are numerous degreed professional landscapers in the Lake Norman area), he or she can recognize any potential hazards and eliminate them from your premises.

Lake Norman rarely experiences major hurricanes, but the effects are felt as they pass along the Atlantic coastline. When hurricane season approaches, I'll post more information on protecting your home and property
