Being Unemployed, Week 1
Posted 07-31-2008 at 12:45 PM by MaryS80
So I lost my job a week ago, during what is easily the worst economy of my lifetime. There was a report on the news today that unemployment is at an all time high. That means more competition for jobs. Just a few days ago a large company shut down all their restaurants without notice. I'm not in that field, but again more competition for jobs.
Maybe I am too optimistic, but I expected to have a job by now. I hit the ground running and put in applications and submitted my resume right away. I've got my resume circulating on three different job boards. I've gotten some really good leads, but no job offers yet. It seems to be a challenge to get paid what I was making before. Everything seems to top out around $10/hr. I might as well forget about the hours I had at my old job. Little to no weekends, and I rarely worked later that 4:30.
Adding to the challenge is not having a car of my own, and no bus service where I live. I am in a DART member city, but the nearest stop is one mile away. Walking that far in this heat is just dangerous.
I've landed a phone interview, an informal in person interview, and two formal interviews so far. I have applied at least 20 places, and called a few back. I have over 7 years experience on my side. Hopefully that means something.

I'm in the same spot you're in Mary. Lot of applications and resumes out, 1 interview. There are too few jobs for too many people.

I am surprised there have not been more responses to this post. I believe so many people are in your situation now. Too few jobs and too much competition. Of course the employers take advantage of the situation by lowering the pay rate. For me it is the same. We have only one car which my husband uses to get to his work place. Public transportation almost non-existent.
Pay rates offered are so low that it sort of makes more sense for me to just stay home with my son and save on not paying for daycare then work for they pay rate they offer and then give all the money to the daycare provider!!! What a mess!!! And I have 9 years of experience in banking and a college degree.Posted 10-11-2008 at 05:50 PM by arev979 -

I know what you mean. I had to leave my job because the hours they gave me I couldn't pay my rent. I had to move to Daytona...no jobs..I just need to find anything so I can save and head to Chicago..oh times are hard. You are NOT alone in this.

Mary, I hope you have found work by now. I've been looking since middle of July and with no promising prospects. I have been able to get some contract work for about 5 to 10 hours a week but that in no way offsets the income loss that we have experienced. We have been toying with starting a commercial cleaning service (no residential) but not sure what the market pays.
