Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Could The Astros Actually Become Sellers This Time Around?

Posted 06-02-2024 at 08:42 PM by case44

The Houston Astros just don't scare their opponents anymore. Whatever amount of mojo this franchise once had is now all but gone.

The team just lost another series at home. It was the Minnesota Twins who just won that three-game series against Houston, two games to one. Minute Maid Park saw the Astros draw three million fans last season, and rightly so. It was the first time since the aughts that that type of thing has happened, and it came in the wake of a resounding world title in 2022. Surprisingly, it didn't happen in 2018, and I'm still stunned by that. Nonetheless, it was good seeing so many come out for the team last season.

It doesn't appear to be the case this year.

Attendance is dropping, and although it's not Oakland A's bad, it is a bit concerning that Houston-area baseball fans are starting to show impatience. Heard the radio guys say it was around 33 thousand who showed up, and while that's still reasonably good, it's not the 40 thousand sellout that it could have been. This Astros team just isn't winning.

So much for your writer's 2024 prediction. Astros winning the World Series? Only in a Bugs Bunny cartoon unless every player gets hypnotized or levitated. What else could your writer have said? He could have just said that King Kong would put craters in Downtown Houston and would probably be more right than the baseball vision he saw. Houston's Boys of Summer used to win at home with ease. Not these days. Not with most of the lineup that you and I both saw in the 2022 Fall Classic, and nobody's getting anything done with runners in scoring position.

This was a dynasty, but is it time? Is it really time for the Houston Astros to even partially rebuild this team? I don't think it even has to be a total teardown like what previous General Manager Jeff Luhnow did many moons ago, but a few guys who can't be signed to long contracts may have to be traded for prospects, some of which who could be major-league ready. Since the Astros need to beef up their farm system, it would not be a bad idea.

Call me crazy, but perhaps it's time for the Astros to do a little selling when the July trade deadline comes calling.

All your points are really good, Case. The next four or five weeks might be the most telling of all where the team needs to go. Did you see where Cavan Biggio was just DFA'd by the Blue Jays? He could be a fit for the Astros if they can work it out.
