Welcome To Case's Column
Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Baseball Needs To Give Up On Retiring Uniform Numbers
How far does Major League Baseball need to go before it realizes what a mistake it's made in allowing teams to retire uniform numbers? What happens when teams run out of numbers for players? 
Look, I am all for paying tribute in appreciation for the great players who have been part of the game in the past. There just needs to be something better than retiring numbers from the uniforms. We need to give every player the opportunity and the privilege of wearing specific numbers if teams so choose. MLB needs for all numbers to be made available to players, irrespective of previous guys' history, stars or not, who have come through the league. Crazy? Hardly.
And when a team actually runs out of numbers used for retiring, what happens then? Symbols? Letters?
In addition, single-digit numbers must only be for position players, coaches, and managers. Pitchers must always wear two-digit numbers. That's just how baseball has worked at the big-league level for so long. Lately, there've been some unsettling trends where we've seen a few of MLB's latest pitchers wearing single-digit numbers for whatever reason they possess. This is Little League stuff, not for the bigs. I don't give a $&#@% what you wore as a kid; in the Show, you should be assigned a number appropriate for your team's play. Let the teams decide.
Now, if we can come up with other tribute ideas for players. Some teams have their own Hall of Fame or some such, and they should. I know the Houston Astros do. Other teams should initiate this practice. Quit shutting down numbers for uniforms.

I think you're on to something here. Paying tribute to great players is one thing, but sooner or later, teams are going to run out of numbers. What's wrong with new players on, say, the Yankees if a rookie wants to wear Yogi Berra's old number? They ought to have a chance at that.Posted 01-18-2024 at 01:03 PM by malfunction
