The only place I am familiar with won't take people that need assistance. They have to be able to be self sufficient, although you can buy a meal plan. Then, when health starts to go downhill, they step in. I'm sure different places have different requirements.

How does the math compare to downsizing to a smaller, less expensive place and hiring some help?

Your husband sounds bored. He enjoys the visiting nurse because it's someone to talk to. Do you have friends, neighbors, that might be willing to visit with him once in a while? Some senior centers have free respite care. You'd get a break and he'd get conversation with someone new. I don't know if they have any that would come to your house, the one near me requires the person to he dropped off. But, they get a group to talk to.

As for being too young or not, obviously that's going to depend on your overall health, and how long your husband might live. There are people your age still working. There are people your age at death's door.
Respite care during the day.. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the suggestion.
