Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Astros' World Series: Storylines, Drama, And Dusty's Elusive Ring

I'll preface this post with this: Dusty Baker did get a World Series championship ring as a player. He did, y'all, and it was back in his playing days with the Los Angeles Dodgers. That was a great way to spend your playing career. Three World Series appearances and one series win.

Fast-forward now to 2022.

Dusty Baker is now a manager, and he's done so for a very long time. And for him to get the Houston Astros job to manage this club, he had to be lured out of retirement. It was also under an unfortunate set of circumstances, but I won't exactly go there right now. It's about baseball, dangit! Baker's managed in the major leagues for three decades and had amassed more than two thousand wins as a manager. He's now in his third World Series doing same, and as I write this chickenscratch, Ol' Dusty is on the cusp of getting the elusive ring of a world champion as a manager! The place is Minute Maid Park. The event: Game 6 of the World Series.

Below is a link to some text and some video, coming courtesy of mlb.com, but I want you to take a close look at that same text regarding Dusty. Great stuff. Dig this:

This World Series Houston has been playing in against the Philadelphia Phillies has not lacked for drama or great storylines. My lands, we've just had some historic moments, many of them regarding Astros players. We've seen Philly Phillies guys hit some home runs. Likewise with the Astros. We've seen two rookie shortstops. We've even witnessed a no-hitter, much less the first combined no-hitter in MLB's postseason history. And that Astros rookie who replaced the departed Carlos Correa? He's apparently already making plenty a name for himself. One Jeremy Pena was tearing up the minor leagues last year, came to camp in Spring Training back in February, and ended up on the Astros' roster for the regular season. What a year, and then some. American League Rookie of the Year? He's a strong candidate for it. World Series MVP? It can be debated, but he's certainly a strong possibility if Houston does pull it off.

But I believe, in a lot of people's minds, at the end of the day, it's going to be Dusty Baker's time in the spotlight. Even if it may be his last, it will certainly have been worth it.

Congrats to the 2022 Houston Astros! Great season. This season was won fair and square, the commitment to player development has succeeded and has paid off, and this is officially a dynasty. This was truly a success story, and a lot of notable things have happened with this team.

Second title in six years. We're ready for more.
