Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / A Popular Wichita Falls Restaurant Changes Its Name

Posted 12-12-2021 at 08:38 PM by case44

Is it time for more Scattershooting?? I'd say so. Welcome back to Case's Column, where the root beer is cold and the hot chocolate is just right. Depending on where you are in America, chances are, as we head for the holidays, you just might be partaking one of those two things. It's either very cold or still very warm out there. You've had your Thanksgiving turkey; now, it's time for a sleigh ride or two with friends you know.

So, without further adieu, let's go hither and thether with this fresh can to kick around.

Once upon a time, Vaca Loca was a successful Mexican food restaurant on Wichita Falls' (Texas) south side. Your writer has been there and absolutely loved that place. Well, something is in progress right this instant that's making me scratch my head a bit.

Why mess with a restaurant with the best Mexican food in town and who has a great reputation with local and regional consumers?

Now, the powers that be have insisted that the name of the place is the only thing that's changing. They won't be changing the menu or their hours of operation, though there's word of adding outdoor patio seating. How I know is, I saw it in a Facebook reference. Vaca Loca is changing to Mi Tio's, and they will have an updated website. Hopefully, on my next time back in Wichita Falls, their food will be as good as always. Mi Tio's has better enchiladas, chips, and tacos than Casa Manana, whose rock-hard tortilla chips are better for skeet-shooting than they are for consuming. Just saying. Even though that cartoon cow is being replaced by a cartoon gringo, fans of the old Vaca Loca can breathe a sigh of relief.

And if I really wanted to get creative, then I'd pick up a to-go order of enchiladas and side them with a to-go order of McBride's steak just two doors down. My hotel would be right across the street from both of them. Yes, literally. They'd go great together.

Need a way to extend your Christmas decorations to other parts of the year? I bet you didn't know that the following subject matter happens to be tropical.

Major League Baseball is in progress with its first extended labor stoppage since 1994, as the sides are trying to come together with a new collective bargaining agreement. Stay tuned and let's all keep our fingers crossed. These negotiations need to get done and must not force a delay on the upcoming season. The league can ill-afford that.

And all the trade talks and free agent signings were all getting so good....

Idle thought: If a flower or grassy decor were a piece of exercise equipment, then wouldn't that make it a eucalypticus?

And..........it's a big one! A Minnesota fisherman just made history, and plenty of vittles are in order with this catch.

Obituaries include Stonewall Jackson, country music legend, and he was a big part of the genre's honky-tonk golden years of the 1950s and '60s. He was also a member of the Grand Ole Opry for fifty years, and he had a string of hits, including, "Why I'm Walkin'", "Can't Hang Up The Phone", "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water", "Waterloo", "BJ The DJ", "Stamp Out Loneliness", "Me And You And A Dog Named Boo", "Old Showboat", and "Don't Be Angry". Jackson passed away last week of vascular dementia at 89.

Abuelo's Mexican Food Embassy had closed in College Station, TX, last year. The franchise had been trying to make inroads in Houston in recent years, but sources say the reason for the College Station closing was due to rigid COVID-19 restrictions. Yet, on my recent trip to Aggieland, no one else had purchased the building. Now that things are back to normal in Texas, you think that, maybe, Abuelo's might reconsider?

Juneteenth a national holiday?? Believe it or not, yes. While many of us were not really watching it, our illegitimate U.S. "president" Joe Biden* actually had the gall to sign Juneteenth into law as a national holiday. Folks, it didn't need to be that high on the totem pole, and individuals can still celebrate that day without all the unneeded hubbub. We don't need another national holiday.

If you're planning on touring New York City anytime soon, then you may want to think again. Some visitors to the Big Apple just got their dollars swiped from them.

Oh, and of those five perpetrators who had been arrested, one of them had only a mere................ thirty-seven prior arrests. That's right, thirty-seven. We have some very bad district attorneys in the United States. This needs to change.

Speaking of crime waves, it's all up in many major U.S. cities with no end in sight. San Francisco just had a huge outbreak of smash-and-grab robberies, many in shopping centers, drug stores, and department stores. And it doesn't end there. San Francisco has also seen smash-and-grab crimes in people's vehicles.

And why has there been a resistance to the word "looting"? If people smash windows of businesses or residences or cars to steal anything of value, then that's counted as looting. There's no reason for crime without consequence. Period. Looting is a crime. There is simply no justification for it. Offended? Too bad. Deal with it. It's a crime. And a crime is still a crime.

Stephen Spielberg is helping bring back on old favorite musical. Many of you would never have thought of Spielberg, someone mostly known for dramatic and science fiction flicks, as one who'd dabble in musicals or even Broadway. But there he is with his new project. Lots of folks were eagerly anticipating upon hearing about it. Well, hold on a bit. His revival of "West Side Story" has not been putting fannies in movie theater seats.

Chris Wallace has announced that he is leaving Fox News Channel after eighteen years. Hard to believe. He had been widely regarded as the best debate moderator on television in recent years. That doesn't necessarily mean that he's been fair to conservatives. But he's leaving, nonetheless, and who knows what his future may bring?

Any guesses on who Fox replaced him with? I honestly don't care as there's always way better things to do on a Sunday morning than watching those news shows!

I'll be taking an overnight rest stop in your neck of the woods on my trip to the desert southwest next week. Dalhart! Any good eating places?

Hey, Mo. Regarding Fox News Sunday, they'll do a rotation for now until a permanent host is named, from what I've heard.

And regarding Dalhart, well, it's only 426 miles from my apartment near Dallas. But, hey, do go. It's in the Texas Panhandle, and that region is worth doing some sightseeing in. As far as local places to stop and eat at, I haven't been there traveling on my own, having only seen it with a previous church group heading and coming back from two ski trips. What I can do for now is show you some excerpts from a Texas TV series where the host did stop in Dalhart.

Mo, here's a spot I wouldn't mind trying, and the restaurant's website. This is from that first YouTube. It's The Grill in Dalhart, and they do have breakfast there. Here's a link for you and it includes a full menu.

Thanks case! I stayed there last year on the drive out and again on the drive back because I was boycotting New Mexico and their ridiculous covid restrictions at the time. Found a decent hotel and gonna book a room with them again. Think I'll try the grill on my way out and a BBQ place on my way back.
