Researching Crime for a Knoxville Apt

Below is a listing of apartments by crime risk via a crime app on my iPhone.

My top priority for a new home is low crime, peace and quiet. I used a crime app to gauge crime at various apartments in Knoxville and around the metro area. Then I plotted all of the apartments on Google Earth, color coded by crime rate with green being low and red high. I wish I could post a picture. It would be useful to understanding the list below.

I have attached the color coded plot from Google Earth.

Legend
Green - Low crime
Yellow - Reasonable or Moderate (Still pretty low crime - I would live there)
Orange - Elevated
Magenta - Concerning
Red - High crime

Nothing was crazy high crime.

I ruled out any apartment higher than “reasonable”. “Elevated” crime is not really that bad but I am picky.

This listing is from my crime app so YMMV and you really need to do your own homework. This works for me. City Data crime rates are a wonderful starting point in researching a city, but it is not neighborhood specific.

The lists generally run west to east and north to south. So top of each category will be north of Farragut and bottom of each category will be Cedar Bluff or toward Seymour.

I currently live in an apartment my app identifies having "elevated" crime. In 2 years, 3 cars have had wheels stolen, the police helicopter makes a routine appearance overhead, and homeless people scrounge through the dumpsters almost nightly. I don't feel unsafe walking around at night but I have heard gunshots on rare occassions. Maybe "elevated" in Knoxville is different but my current experience has caused me to want an apartment my app identifies as having "low" crime. Safety and security are just important. The summer riots didn't help any.

I wasn’t trying to map every single apartment, just get a feel for where I would find low crime for my own purpose finding a safe apartment to live.

There isn’t a single area that is low crime or high crime. It is more patchwork than that. There are areas that tend safer or more dangerous, but it is not that simple. Generally, in the city limits is higher crime. Along I-75 is higher crime. North Knoxville is higher crime. West Knoxville close to the freeway is moderate crime but reduces the further away you get the freeway or the further away you go. North towards Halls Crossroads is lower crime.

You have to take these listings with a grain of salt. It is just from my crime app and there is so much more to real crime in real places than sweeping with a broad brush. If I have listed your apartment high crime and it is not, this is the best I can do from 2,400 miles away. People on City Data forums are always asking where the safe apartments are, and since I did all this work for my own purpose of finding a place with very low crime, I thought I would share it since it was already done. It is not a be all or end all and your personal experiences may be much different than what I posted above.
