Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Oldies 97.7 (Lubbock) Needs A Little Tweak With The Product

Oh, it's got good intentions. Not many radio markets in the USA have stations which specialize in a 1960s-1970s music format. Very few, in fact.

Well, in Lubbock, there actually is one and it's on a low-power frequency and a subchannel of a local sports station. And KTTU-FM (97.3) has some pretty good company in its flock of channels. K249DU (97.7) is that oldies station I referred to. We call it Oldies 97.7. There are no deejays outside of the syndicated John Tesh and the pairing of Bob & Sheri. They do have one announcer. It's quite entertaining and one of the few stations on mainstream terrestrial radio which has that format. The playlist is only halfway decent. Many '60s songs don't get played at all. Some of the ones that do are seriously butchered just to fit certain time constraints. And how does "Sexual Healing" make it onto the playlist? I don't care if it is Marvin Gaye performing it; it was recorded in the early '80s and does not fit the format.

If nothing else, West Texans with radios and anyone with a computer can get their '60s fix when they don't feel like listening to SiriusXM and also need the local touch from time to time. Hey, where else can you hear "One Toke Over The Line" by Brewer & Shipley? Can you believe that that tune actually got performed on The Lawrence Welk Show by Dick Dale and Gail Farrell? Go check it out on YouTube; it's there in plain, um, daylight. In the meantime, Oldies 97.7 needs an expansion of its playlist and probably needs to rethink the shorter cuts of certain hit songs.

And if they ever needed a jock to man the controls, well, then, I could be that guy....

Looking at the web site, it lists Ice Ice Baby. That’s worse than your example.

97.3 is essential listening for Tech fans there, and I’d assume it has a much wider audience. They’ve earned their pay and then some during football season in recent years. At least they can now talk about the Chiefs.

They've apparently confused two songs done by the Dave Clark Five. They sing "Glad All Over" and "Over And Over"; the problem is, they stuck the former title on the latter song!
