Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Astros: Excited About Leon, But Marisnick May Return Briefly

The Houston Astros picked an interesting plum not too long ago when they nabbed outfielder Pedro Leon on International Signing Day. Many fine major leaguers were taken from this annual ritual, and I just believe that Leon will be a great player in the league. I'd say the Astros had done real good, don't you think?

With Leon signed, the Astros will send the Cuban import to the minors so he could progress at a good pace. He's got plenty of tools. I predict he'll be in the bigs by 2022. In the interim, however, who fills the center field void after the loss of George Springer to the Toronto Blue Jays? They do have the speedy Myles Straw, and he can be used most every day. But there's a player who had previously spent time with the Astros who became available as a potential pickup for one year.

That player? Jake Marisnick.

Yes, him. He's still fairly popular among the Houston faithful and was a big part of the 2017 championship team during his five seasons with the Astros before departing for the New York Mets in 2020. Word is, he's available, so he becomes a low-risk --- and familiar --- possibility for Houston's center field vacancy, at least until Pedro Leon reaches the major leagues.

So, don't be surprised if Jake Marisnick shows back up in Astros orange for at least one season more. Good guy, and great defensive player.

This is where Houston will have to make some noise while they wait for future draft picks to blossom, and that's the international circuit. They've had success before with this, and from what I've seen in Leon, he appears to be the real deal.
