Welcome To Case's Column
Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.![Stick Out Tongue](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!
Regards,

Health Camp? Um, It Isn't What You Think
Your favorite blogger has been to Central Texas many times. And just now, I've been on YouTube, where, lo and behold, a mystery has just been resolved. ![Think](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/think.gif)
For years, I've driven through Troy, Texas, on Interstate 35 and noticed a billboard with the words Health Camp and a cheeseburger underneath it. Nothing else. Just those two things. I've often wondered if it was a piece of property located underneath the billboard (There happens to be a small shack of a building which is unsigned). All this time, I've been thinking that this "Health Camp" was in Troy, but what struck me is, how come a burger is featured as associated with the words "Health Camp"?

Leave it to YouTube to provide an unlikely answer. There is a television series called "The Texas Bucket List", and its host, Shane McAuliffe, goes to different outposts in the state highlighting things from restaurants to tourist attractions to roadside oddities to hidden gems, and so forth. Well, it so happened that one of Shane's stops was a little place near the Waco traffic circle, revealing the name of what is actually a sock hop. The name of the place is Health Camp, and it's nowhere near related to GNC or Vitamin Shoppe, or a veggie salad bar.
It's none of those things. It's in Waco, not Troy.
This place serves burgers, fries, onion rings, and shakes. It has a long history dating back to the 1950s. Legend has it that Elvis Presley, who was once stationed at the old Connally Air Force Base in Waco back in the day, actually took the time to make visits to this place to get a meal there.
So, this writer has learned something new and surprising. Now, this burger joint just might find its way on my personal "bucket list" for future drives in Central Texas. Where Waco is concerned, it's going to be hard not stopping at the legendary Heitmiller's for steaks or burgers. Looks like Health Camp will need to be checked out.
In the meantime, here's that YouTube from 2013, but the place is certainly still open.
