Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Remininscing About The Lost Art Of The Late Night Movie

Turn on the television in 1976, and you'll find at least two channels offering some sort of a late night movie. Great days, weren't they? Even though, in that time, one often had just six TV channels or less, depending on what market they had, on their rabbit-ears , there'd at least be something intriguing on.

Turn on the television in 2020, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a late night movie unless you just happen to have HBO or Showtime.

The more technology we have, well, the more things go to pieces in the parlance of keeping entertained. Like keeping our attention spans, ..... well, ... attentive. But let's just look back for a second at the art of the late night movie the way it used to be.

First off, you had the ever-present announcer:

"We will return to The Last Gunfight, starring Laird Granger and Ann Huckleby".

OR

"We now return to The Last Gunfight, starring John Wayne and Ann Sheridan".

Man, what I'd give to have had that job. Imagine not just the money, but the exposure.

And then come the graphics:

Networks and local stations often invested in whatever amount of creativity or technology made available to them to make what you used to see on TV happen. After the late local news, you'd eagerly anticipate the start of the movie. Many times, this writer wouldn't be able to stay up and watch. Thanks to the advent of the video cassette recorder, guess what? You get to see what you've missed.

Wouldn't it just be something if a network decided to give up its humorless talk shows and instead insert an offering of a old movie with today's technology? Okay, maybe not all of today's bells, whistles, and kitchen sink, but just enough music and graphics for intros, outros, and bumpers. Yeah, there's cable, too, but I'd love to see this on a station with one of the old broadcasting networks.

That, alone, would be reason enough to tune in.

"Tonight, on the Case Late Movie , Alan Alda and Polly Holliday star in "Escape From Crazy Mountain".

(After a brief bit of dead air) "Our movie will begin in just a moment".

Don't try to look any titles up, gang. I just improvised as I went.

So I watched the CBS movie intro. And it made me want to watch the Medusa Touch. Guess CBS actually got things right back in the day as they're not so convincing to me today!

I remember. Even in the middle of the commercial break, they'd have a bumper to let people know who just turned in what was on (and calm the restless viewers the movie would be back).

I remember the ABC Sunday Night Movie openings (the 70s and 80s were totally different).

I do have some over the air channels that just feature movies, but the commercials are insufferable.
