My Experience With Politicians

Posted 08-19-2020 at 05:00 PM by aliasfinn

When I was 11 years old me and my younger brother and our friends would do jobs for this guy that lived in our neighborhood.

He owned property about 80 miles away which was just a strip of woods that went downhill. He would drive us down there and pay us each $2 to clear out all the rocks, weeds and logs.

There was a big old wooden outhouse, a 3-seater, that stunk to high heaven and always had a battle between bees and poop-flies going on in it. Most people just crapped behind a tree, it was more sanitary that way.

That was the first time I ever saw a rattlesnake. It was a small timber rattler coiled against a log. We would always come home covered with dirt, sweat and ticks.

One Saturday he paid us each a dollar to put flyers on door handles, he was running for alderman. He told us if we saw any of his opponent's signs to kick them over.

As I was putting a flyer on a door handle I saw my brother shredding the hell out of a sign in the yard. I told him that was our guy's sign and he said, " I know, but I don't like him very much."

We continued putting flyers on door handles until this cop, who was the brother of the guy running against our guy, drove up and told us it was illegal to put flyers on door handles.

When we went back to our boss and told him about the cop he flew into a rage, cussing and bitching, just like a little kid. He wasn't going to give us our dollar but remembered he needed us that week to work on his property.

Years later I drove my brother and his friend up to the school so they could vote, they both recently registered for the first time and were excited. I waited outside smoking a cigarette.

Eventually a smiley-faced weasel in an expensive suit came out and started talking to the people outside. He came up to me and stuck his hand out. Reluctantly I shook it. It felt like a fish on a hook. He was one of the candidates and started talking politics to me. I told him I couldn't vote and he said, " Ohhhh." He then walked away, looking back at me a couple of times.

Those were the only times I got close to politicians.
