Another weekend full of good intentions...

Posted 07-19-2008 at 03:58 AM by LilyLaLa

I couldn't help but smile at a thread title I saw yesterday on the CD forum: "So long, crap!"

What a splendid idea. And how long have I meant to empty all these boxes in my own garage, only to have something else come up to interrupt it, over and over again? How often have I said, "This Sunday, we're going to the flea market" only to wake up Sunday morning to dark skies and downpours? How many times have I even started the project, only to be called away from it by one or more children staging some sort of child-emergency?

I'll admit, too--it's not just the garage. Boxes of Crap are everywhere, in closets, under beds, stacked in corners, wherever.

I have enough childhood projects and artwork and outgrown 'favourite' toys to open a museum to our children's past...I can't simply throw all that out, not without breaking my own heart, but where else can I put it beside...boxes?

And there's all the things that were simply meant to live in boxes most of the time: Christmas decorations, out-of-season clothes and outgrown baby clothes (waiting for the next family baby), thousands of photographs, books that are waiting for the bookshelves my husband promises but never builds, and who-knows-what-else that's in the boxes under and behind all THAT stuff.

It's a bit overwhelming...no wonder I never get through it.

But, "So Long, Crap" has stuck in my mind like a rallying cry, and y'know...today, I'm doing it. I might not (certainly will not) get all the way to the back garage wall, but I'll at least fill the truck with boxes and bags I don't want, and first thing Monday it's going to the Salvation Army shop and the dump.

I may be losing a few trinkets and mementos and all those 'just-in-case-we-need-it-someday' things, but HEY.... I'll be gaining a GARAGE!! I might even put the car in there, what a thought.

So no more excuses, and you won't see me on CD the rest of the day, because I'm REALLY DOING IT...right now.

Thanks, Sponger42!!

OK, you've inspired me by guilt. Guess what I'm off to do?
    Great blog by the way.

I'm amazed at how three little words became so inspiring (or guilt-inducing) in our house -- I cleaned out the car and started loading it with Boxes-o'-Crap, and before I knew it, DH is FINALLY painting the bathroom after months of "maybe-this-weekend-dear".

Better yet, all the kids cleared off for the day...probably afraid of being assigned some sort of cleaning job.

    YAY!
