Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

It's High Time For I-19 To Hop On With Everybody Else

Posted 09-22-2019 at 09:46 AM by case44

Once upon a yesterday, the powers that be who put together Interstate 19 in Arizona between Tucson and Nogales had decided to do something revolutionary and different. Instead of measuring distances in miles, highway officials decided on using the metric system. So, instead of miles, you'd see distances in kilometers.

I was just on Google Street View to take a tour of I-19. You've got your typical desert scenery that you get over most of Arizona. It's just a trip reading those supposed mileage indicators telling you when the next exit is and how far you are from important cities and towns. Keep in mind that, back in the day, this implementation was to be the beginning of a new wave of metrics used not just on I-19, but on other then-new and future interstates to come on the horizon.

Gee, sports fans, what's happened?

New roads have been built since then, and ....... we're still seeing mileages. I-27, miles. I-69, miles. I-37, miles. On and on. Look, nobody does things in kilometers in America. We use miles. There was word from Tucson officials that new signage would include the use of miles. Hard to believe, but there reportedly was opposition from a few businesses and residents along the route in regards to the changes. Come on Arizonans, let's get real here. I-19 needs to be on par with all the other highways in the interstate network. Somewhere, Mr. Eisenhower has got to be rolling in his grave. Kilometers are just not the 'in' thing in American interstate highways, or any other road model.

Ditch it. .... Now.
