Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

More Scattershooting / Case Gets A Jury Summons

Welcome back, all, to this lively diversion known as Case's Column, brought to us right here on the greatness that is City-Data, where it's great to be alive. And it's once again time to do a little Scattershooting, where chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, and peach go neatly together, hand in hand. Okay, maybe not necessarily on the same cone, but I digress....

********

Well, this was going to come sooner or later. As inevitable as change, taxes, and death, so comes the dreaded jury summons. So, Ol' Case got greeted with one in the mail about a month ago, and today was the day I went in for the selection process. About eight or nine different cases were being slated to go at different times, and your writer was present at the county courts building, assembled with two hundred-plus other potential jurors. Once the exemption parties were weeded out, what was left were groups of twelve and one large group of fifty. Guess which group I ended up in? If you said the group of fifty, then you win a prize. My dealings with the county are done for this week, but I now have to go back on Monday (pending the outcome of a Friday phone call to see if I'm still required to go in) to get into another selection process.

That's why one group had fifty people, as it was a pretty important trial, and that group will have to be narrowed down to twelve jurors. There's still the possibility that I may have to miss a work day or two next week (Monday, fortunately, is an off-day). But it won't hurt my feelings if I'm not picked, as I checked off no on the selection. If I am selected, then so be it; I'll do whatever the powers that be say.

Whichever does happen, I'll just be glad to get it all overwith.

There has just been a Powerball winner. Check out the link here; age-wise, he's just a spring chicken.

I've missed a few high school baseball games this year, and the primary reason has been weather. And such is happening again tonight, as I was originally slated to head for Frisco (Texas) Wakeland High School's field for more baseball. Not happening.

Thunderstorms are rolling into my region tonight and tomorrow, and some of them are already going on now. Could be some great theater, but please, folks, do stay safe out there.

Some time ago, Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport had undergone a terminal renovation. I could have sworn it happened earlier this decade. Well, now, there's word that expansion is taking place at the airport to allow additional space for airlines and people. From the looks of things, tons of improvement will be coming, and this looks a lot better than what I've seen previously.

Face it, sports fans, Oklahoma City is now officially a big-league city. It deserves a big-league airport. Now, if they can just build a larger control tower....

You might say that this was more than a fishing trip. For NFL star Von Miller, he should be eternally glad he didn't catch more than he already had. In the meantime, check out that biiiiiiiiiiig fishy....

Notable obituaries include Henry Bloch. For some reason, I thought his last name was Block with a k. That is not the case here. Anyway, Bloch was a key figure in H&R Block's success as a tax preparation company, having founded it with his brother, Richard, back in 1955. I still remember him from those great commercials he used to do on television way back in the 1970s. Sadly, none of those have surfaced on YouTube. He was 96, but, oh, what a life he had.

Thank you, Henry Bloch, for revolutionizing tax preparations for many Americans.

Wishing someone or something good luck is not as easy as it sounds. Ask this recent passenger about to board a plane in China. Sure, they were just coins, but....

How crazy does the left continue to get?? Well, this latest offering doesn't surprise me in the least, but it shows that America is worse than divided. The majority of us have a head on our shoulders, but the remainder have resorted to psychotic extremism. Bernie Sanders, certainly nobody's hero, is actually running for president again. (And how old is he, anyway? 95, perhaps??) And, like all the other delusionally insane candidates, he shares this gem with the American people. Our friend Greg Gutfeld analyzes this for us:

Look, folks, just vote conservative next year. Besides, what are these dingbat Dems going to run against next year, anyway? A great economy? Yes, and they've got nothing. We are just one Democrat away from losing America as a sovereign nation. Please keep that in mind.

Back to OKC for another second: I am mourning the closing of one of the Rib Crib locations. It's the one on Meridian about a mile south of Interstate 40 and surrounded by lots of commerce. I always stopped there whenever I'd make an OK City day trip, and lunch would always be there. Rib Crib is an enormously fine barbecue chain which does not need to decline, but rather to expand. Perhaps they can find new locations in Quail Springs and Bricktown, two places Rib Crib has never been but probably should consider.

And if you don't like Rib Crib, well, then, you just don't like sampling different sauces in those labeled containers.

Just checked I-69's Texas Alliance website. No new updates.

Still.

Next month won't be as originally planned. My niece will be graduating from Cal State-East Bay. But she has elected not to walk across the stage at the commencement exercise.

So be it. It's her choice. As it is, I was not particularly fond of having to fly to California for the week. Too much pee pee and too much bad politicking in the Bay Area. Not worth it. This trip would have been fine fifteen years ago, but not today. Also some family issues keeping things a little touchy and distant.

So, no Cali for Case next month. There won't be any available hotels, anyway. As for what my new plans are, well, what? Staycation. Low on money, but then, there are things around my fair burg that I can still do.

And you thought Powerball was the hottest thing going. Perhaps, but that's until you've seen the latest on Jeopardy!, where a contestant is setting all-time records on the show for winnings.

Mel Brooks is now 92, but some of us may not really know it. Chugging along, he keeps going and going. His new Broadway show will be a tribute to the things he's done throughout his career as he takes part in Broadway's In Residence series. Here's the link to tell you the skinny:

Time for me to put the plug in the jug for now. Have a happy rest of your April. May these rain showers bring you some happy flowers!

And there you are.

Regarding my jury duty, well, folks, it's now over.

Only got to be part of one selection process, but the potential second will not happen. Got cancelled.

Back to life as usual now.

You may be wondering what my niece will do after college. Well, she's got a good gig not very far away, as she'll be working under a professor at Stanford University to get her foot in the door. For four years, she has studied to become a professor. World history.
