Dear Fellow Neighbor,

I had the pleasure along with many others during the April 2019 Chicago municipal run off election to work with Lori Lightfoot’s Mayoral campaign and Andre Vasquez in the 40th Aldermanic ward. Both of them won their respective races. Congratulations to Chicago mayor elected Lori Lightfoot who will be 1st black woman and 1st openly gay person to hold the post. After serving 36 years as an Alderman in Chicago’s 40th ward, Patrick O’Connor was defeated by community organizer, and former rapper, Andre Vasquez (54% to 46%). O’Connor was infamously known for being apart of the Vrdolyak 29 during 1980s Chicago City Council wars working against Harold Washington. Chicago’s political landscape will drastically be different after May 20th when the new council begins that’s for sure.

With the excitement and dust settled from the election, I hope many of you remain aware and active to hold our elected representatives accountable when they’re in the wrong. I most certainly will be doing just that as I have stated many times before. The next city council will have to tackle crime, funding of pensions, property taxes, affordable housing/rent control, Police reform’s and more. It’ll be a difficult task to clean up years of the pervious Mayors and their corrupt administrative practices. While it will be difficult, it won’t be impossible. People power is imperative in helping our elected representatives to know what we want and what should be done. In doing this, this will keep our local government open and transparent! Chicago truly can be the epitome of the “shining city on the hill”. But remember, it takes you the People to make that happen.

As many of you know, the weather is getting warmer and unfortunately criminal activity does spike a bit. We had a gang related shooting that took place in North Uptown during the early part of March. Two people were shot. My only criticism for Harry Osterman and how he wishes to handle that- don’t bank on teenage interns to save people from criminal activity at the satellite office. One can only wish there will be an increased ACTIVE police presence in the area. When I was running for Alderman, the people’s constantly complained how the cops were nowhere to be found, or if they did call 9-1-1 it took 10 minutes to talk to someone but being too late by then. I surely hope when it comes to public safety issues like this, it will be corrected.

After a fire broke out in early March destroying their old office, the Syrian Community Network will be temporarily setting up shop at Edgewater Presbyterian Church, 1020 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. Many in the community, even myself, reached out to give support to this great humanitarian cause. I can officially thank the 2,415 residents of the 48th who voted for me in my race back in the February 2019 election. I remain grateful to this day for the experience of running and the praise I still get when I’m out and about in the ward. Thank you all for making me feel like a local hero. With that said, stay safe, be blessed and have a great week.”
