Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

The Day The Music Died --- Almost Sixty Years Later

Posted 01-28-2019 at 08:58 AM by case44

It was not the best of nights to be out in an airplane, particularly one taking off from Mason City, Iowa. The time was winter, 1959, and the weather contained too much snow. All that Buddy Holly and a few others did was get a head start to the next stop, finishing a show in Clear Lake and progressing towards Moorhead, Minnesota via Mason City and Fargo. He had to charter a plane because his buses either had broken down or didn't have good heating (the latter of which cost Buddy his drummer to a hospital stay for frostbite). Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper), along with the pilot, got on an airplane....

You already know how that excursion turned out.

Fast forward to 2019, where today, cold conditions would likely would force a similar fate. We remember Buddy and the gang this coming Sunday. Many will plan to gather at the crash site near Clear Lake, and oldies stations very likely will give pause. And to think that Waylon Jennings, back then an erstwhile Lubbock radio jock who had just begun picking some bass guitar for Buddy, would thank his stars that he did not board that fateful flight, though he obviously had to feel bad for his comrades. Waylon would eventually have a successful country career, first in Nashville, and later in his own right as one of the "outlaws" in an innovative country music genre.

And who can forget Don McLean with his tribute to Buddy in a song of remembrance of what he refers to as "The Day The Music Died", and how it culminated in a gathering of lyrics and notes which we've come to know as "American Pie"? No doubt, that tune will be chiming in on oldies and pop stations very soon.

As for Buddy Holly, a special event is taking place in Downtown Lubbock this coming weekend to honor him. I'll give it to you in the following link. If I had any money to spend, then I'd go check out the event.

A lot of us on City-Data still take the time to listen to Buddy's music, as that will live on forever. You'll be seeing me post some Buddy Holly songs from time to time leading up to this coming weekend. In the meantime, check out this Buddy Holly timeline. Reminisce, if you will.

Just checked Lubbock's forecast for this weekend, and the National Weather Service calls for sunny skies on all three days (Fri thru Sun), with 60s for highs and upper 30s for lows. For those of you who may want to go, well, there you are!

I've been hearing on the radio all week about many folks in Iowa gathering near the crash site in very cold weather. Real fans never forget.
