7 less known facts about coupons that you should know

Posted 12-19-2018 at 04:06 AM by juliathomas1

It’s no secret that coupons can help you save lots. In fact, in 2017 alone coupons helped consumers save $3.1 billion. That’s a big number, eh? What started as a marketing tactic by Coca-Cola has now gained so much traction, that we cannot even imagine a world without deals.
These days coupons and deals are very popular with internet coupons on the rise and printable coupons also not lagging behind in the race. But where you might know everything about how to skillfully and strategically use coupons, you might not know everything about the coupon itself.
As an extreme couponer though, your information should be vast. Which is why we have collected 7 amazing facts about coupons that are not commonly known. Read on to find out!
The use of digital coupons is on the rise
There was a time when paper coupons reigned supreme. However, the modern era is changing this rapidly owing to the use of mobile devices. The millennial generation is leaning toward digital couponing and is leading this change in couponing trends. Estimates show that by next year, 2019, 31 billion internet coupons will be redeemed.
In the last two years alone, the use of digital coupons has spiraled by 70%. This increase in mobile coupon usage is because of the convenience the process offers. Clipping coupons or getting them printed piles up costs. Moreover, the traditional way of couponing also eats up more time. The use of apps has made digital couponing even easier. When an app can collect and apply coupons, why do it yourself? Clicking is, after all, easier than clipping.
Coupons are not only for those who can’t afford
You might have thought that couponing is for those who cannot afford to spend extra cash. In truth, however, coupons are used by rich people as well. In fact, it’s the educated and affluent people who are more likely to hunt for a deal. A 2013 survey shows that 74% of adult shoppers in America who earn a yearly income of $75,000 use more coupons.
This is in comparison with 59% of those individuals who have an annual income that sums up to or below $35,000. In the same way, college graduates are also savvier shoppers. A 2010 infographic shows that 78% of college-educated people are more likely to redeem online coupons. So, it’s not about how much you have in your pockets but about simply being wiser with your expenditures.
Shows such as Extreme Couponing are fake
Never believe everything you watch on the television. Shows like Extreme Couponing make saving a whole lot of money seem easy-peasy. But that’s only because they are shot and cropped beforehand. The time and effort that goes into couponing like that are not revealed in its entirety. Also, the stores that participate also fake it to make it to television.
In reality, you can never save that much even though you can save a really good amount. Back when the show used to air, Fry’s supermarket once took to their Facebook page to clarify that all the couponing that viewers saw was purely for promotional purposes. This resulted in an outcry but oh, well. You cannot wipe off shelves of deals and get away with it because all coupons and the coupon usage policies of stores have buying limits.
Coupon fraud is a massive crime
Yep, couponing the wrong way and taking any illegal routes can end you up in jail. Even though it may seem odd to use coupon and crime in the same sentence. Thing is, couponing related scams cause massive losses. These can range from $300 million and $600 million on an annual basis. However, the digits vary from one store to another.
Photocopying, decoding, and selling coupons are all illegal. In fact, clipping coupons from newspapers that you have not bought are considered theft. Fraudulent usage of coupons can lead you to be jailed for not up to one, two or three but 17 years! However, that is the highest it has gone. Commonly, coupon fraud schemes land one in jail for two to three years. Fines of $200,000 are not uncommon either.
Nashville is the most frugal US city
Nashville, Tennessee the most frugal city in the United States with the average savings reaching to $267.94 per couponer. In 2017 the total sum of savings there amounted up to $7.2 million. This is according to the stats revealed by coupons.com for 2018 based on coupon clippings. The second most frugal city is Philadelphia, Pennsylvania whereas the third most is Houston, Texas.
There was a time when Atlanta, Georgia was the city where coupon clippings were the highest. However, this has changed. Today it stands on number 18 on the list of the most frugal cities. Orlando, Florida which was crowned the most frugal city in 2015 by the same website has taken the number 12 position on this year’s list with its savings in 2017 at $10.8 million. Let’s see what these stats unfold for 2019.
You can earn money with coupons
Connecting businesses using their coupons to customers is a way to earn money. Hence, there’s not only one way you can make money when it comes to coupons. Couponing websites earn money through a number of ways. They may win at it by employing a traditional retail model in which they offer a further reduction on deals by already paying the deal providers.
Ad placements are another way to earn money through your online couponing business. Moreover, a coupon website may charge commissions based on sales or charge a fee for marketing the business’s products. Bulk sales and affiliate programs are other ways to make the business bring in money. The key is to be able to maintain great relationships with businesses and drive in a whole lot of traffic. Both are easier said than done, though.
September is national coupon month
Most people are unaware that September is national coupon month in America. But once you know it, you really can’t un-see it. There are deals everywhere during this month. You’re probably wondering, why September? The reason is actually pretty simple. Because expenditure goes up in the ninth month of the year.
With children making there way back to school, a lot has to be arranged. Clothes, bags, stationery, everything needs to be bought. More lunches need to be packed and so on. So, it only makes sense that September is the national coupon month. Coupon celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009 after first coming out in 1909.
