I don't think you can go wrong with either town, they just have different vibes which you will experience for yourself. The community on Solomon's Island that my friend lives in is called Mill Creek Boating Community located off Dowel Road close to Anne Marie Gardens. She also said there are a few other nice townhomes down that way as well you may be interested in checking out. She also mentioned that Solomons is likely going to be more expensive than living in California given its location. Depending on where exactly you live on Solomons the prices vary (waterfront etc) which may be a consideration but it all depends on your circumstances of course. My friend also mentioned that there are fewer apartment options on Solomons, those tend to serve as retirement communities and can be a bit more pricey. As I mentioned earlier, you have quite a few options in St. Mary's County. My friend in California who lives in the Wildewood community said they are building more apartments/condos as we speak. You have plenty of options to choose from so you will find a fit that's right for you. If I get any more info, I will definitely pass it along. Enjoy your trip and let us know where you end up!
