Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Even More Scattershooting / Reminiscing With Hee Haw

Posted 11-18-2018 at 05:42 PM by case44

Welcome again to Case's Column, where you get places, things, and events as they traverse through the trappings of my own mind. So, now, I'm transferring items from brain to computer (as opposed to paper) while many of you are about to do some Thanksgiving traveling, and I'm sitting here doing some Scattershooting just for you.

Meantime, let's ride this horsey....

By now, you've heard and read about the passing of country singer / guitarist Roy Clark. We lost him this past Thursday at the age of 85. Clark had a number of hit country songs in the 1960s and '70s with "The Tips Of My Fingers", "If I Had To Do It All Over Again", "Come Live With Me", "Yesterday, When I Was Young", "Honeymoon Feelin'", and "I Never Picked Cotton". He needs to also be remembered as an influential guitarist (and a great banjo-picker), revolutionizing the instrument and revolutionizing country music through an important period. All of which brings me to my next thought, and that's the TV series, "Hee Haw", which Clark co-hosted, along with Buck Owens. That show brought country music into the mainstream of America, particularly locations that hadn't heard a lot of country music or broadcast other country-music-based shows on television.

Hee Haw was a staple of my Saturday night TV viewing for a few years of my life, but it had spent a good two decades on the air, having made its debut on CBS-TV and staying there for two years before venturing off into syndication. There are many things which I'll remember from that show, from the pretty girls to the cornbread humor to the music from great country artists.

Here's a sample from that great show:

Just what were you thinking during that Alabama-The Citadel NCAA football clash yesterday? That halftime score was a 10-10 tie. The last time the Alabama Crimson Tide had gone to the half without a lead was back in 2015. You thought that The Citadel would provide the biggest upset of the year, right? My co-worker thought the same thing.

Not to be, folks. Alabama came back and stomped all over The Citadel, 50-17.

Houston, as a city of class and as fellow Texans, please do yourself and America a favor. Do not host the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Just reject it. Let Milwaukee or Miami deal with all the baggage, the flag burning, and all the other negative things that are expected to go on during the week of July 16 in 2020.

Windows 10 now runs on my new computer tower. Yep, I had to get it replaced recently, but this is running really well. And a really good feature of Windows 10 is its screen savers. Many good views of real estate from all over the world. Wish they'd show more locales from here in the contiguous 48.

Have you been noticing how dead our C-D blog pages have been this week? I noticed that, on our calendar, we had four days this week where there was absolutely no activity on these blog pages. In all the time I've spent in these blog entries, I've never seen a drought like this before. Sometimes, we'd go through a month and there'll be just one day in inactivity in a 30-day period. But I've never seen it where four days in one week had not one blog post entered in. Up until then, when you consider how active our site had been for all this time, what with so many contributions from so many people each week, I'd say we've had one heck of a run.

And, hopefully, we'll get things back on track soon. Thank you goes out to all the people who have taken the time to make our blog pages work. Some are frequent writers, and some are infrequent. Some come on here knowing exactly what they're doing and how this rolls, and others don't. Let me bid a big "thank you" to the fellow bloggers who have contributed in a great way with their own flair and style, right here for people around the world to read. You make it happen!

Frisco (Texas) Wakeland's Wolverines still can't win a playoff game. The school made the playoffs once again, and they lost once again in the first-round game. Back in 2015, that was the only season in which Wakeland clinched a playoff berth and won their first-round game. That team made it as far as the third round. All other years, however, the Wolverines have been a one-and-gone team.

Forgive the tired cliche, but maybe next year will be better.

Take this can and kick it.

Hey, that'd make a great country song....

Did Chicken Express overbuild in its quest to reach more people in more locations? In the case of many parts of Texas, it's likely they have. Honestly, I love Chicken Express for its great menu choices, with great fried chicken, green beans, corn-on-the-cob, and rolls. Love it.

Well, I have learned that the chain has closed a number of locations, including several here in North Texas. They completely overbuilt in Frisco, but they will still have two locations, and both are reportedly doing well. I have also read that they had one location in El Paso, and................................that one has closed, too.

Along those same lines, the Coyote Drive-In movie theater appears to have also built overzealously. Their Lewisville, Texas, location has closed. Just not enough business like their officials had hoped. Might as well hop over to Fort Worth for the experience, as customers continue to flock there.

Message to Joy Behar of ABC-TV's "The View": Just shut up already!

The extreme far left panelist of that horrendous show just made another outrageous comment, this time on the CMA Award show from recently. She said that the country music award program did not "get political" during the show. So what? Do we need for them to continue the merciless attacks on our president and his administration like celebs on the other award shows have?

The answer is a resounding "no".

This year's CMA Awards got their lowest rating ever, but it's because recent trends with other award shows have done damage, causing people to expect the same crap to happen at the CMAs. And, of course, it didn't.

Just shut up, Joy Behar. You are not part of the solution in American political life (or any other life, for that matter). You are part of the problem....

Major League Baseball has its annual Winter Meetings coming up next month. Lots of movement is expected like any other year. We will see if my Houston Astros might even be a bit of a player there. Here's a link to MLB's rumor mill. Juicy stuff out there.

Seen any good movies lately? I haven't darkened a door of a movie theater in far too long. Maybe I need to go back to the Drive-In, right? Perhaps I need to join those headed for the Coyote. You know, I've never been and need to give it a try. For now, though, here's how this week's movie fare did:
