Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting Once More / Losing Altuve A First For The Astros

It's that time again, isn't it? Yes, and there's no choice. Time for Scattershooting here on City-Data, where it's great to be alive. My pantry is fresh out of marshmallows for the computer campfire, so you'll just have to go to the store and get me some more.

When you have time, of course....

********

The Houston Astros' Jose Altuve is on the disabled list. That's right, just let that sink in for a little bit. It's only the first time in Altuve's career that he's had to deal with something like this. First time ever. Never happened before. You know him, as he's always itching to play, but must rest now or risk everything. It's just the 10-day disabled list, but still....

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/...er-knee-injury

A knee is something that must be handled with care, even if you think everything's okay. With Altuve, you've got to take 150 percent caution on something of that nature. Ruining a knee can cost one a career, and Altuve can't possibly be done yet. Not now. Not with just seven years in the bigs with more to accomplish. Right now, he has to take it easy. The Astros' playoff run depends on his health, and they need for him to be healthy when we get to two months from now.

As it is, this is not something that any fan would want to get used to, but then, Altuve is not getting any younger. Obviously, he doesn't want to get used to getting injured and being on the DL. Sadly, something like this is just part of baseball. When Altuve is completely healed up, everything should be just fine. Now, it's a matter of how long Jose can go without getting injured again. His career is too precious right now, and he still has much work to do.

Vegan activism has gotten out of control. Wait until you see what those jokers are protesting now....

So, perhaps, you vegans may want to take advantage of a great opportunity tomorrow. It's going to be National Guacamole Day, and greener pastures abound.

Frisco (Texas) Wakeland football is getting closer to getting started. They plan to contend at the Orange Crush, but they need a quarterback. Texas Football sez that two athlete players, both underclassmen, have a chance at playing both ways. We'll see if that bears any good fruit. Oh, and they'll need to find a way to win a playoff game once they get in, something that the Wolverines have done only once in school history.

Could it be? Kim Kardashian has decided to get a haircut. All she wanted to do was get a new bob. And while she's not exactly Rapunzel or Crystal Gayle, she'll actually wish she'd gotten a color instead. Well, maybe....

It's hot all around the Northern Hemisphere. So, if you're planning to take British Airways on a future flight, then you may want to prepare a little weight-loss regiment. Hey, just saying.

When you go on the Politics & Other Controversies forum, just how seriously do you take the stuff that gets written by some of us? Look, you don't have to take certain things seriously, as a laughable number of threads attacking our current president are proof enough. Stop and take a look at the subject matter. The hate. The ignorance. The vitriol. All of that coming from left-wing posters who vote Democrat and still, somehow, choose to live in America. Discerning minds know better, and those who know better also know better. When the Democrats have a new spokesperson who wants to bring back socialism to the United States, that party is in major trouble. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has a cute, but goofy-looking, face, but she is as shallow as a middle school student who just failed her final exam.

Here's National Review with this:

https://www.nationalreview.com/corne...age-economics/

Socialism does not, has not, and will not work. Period.

While many Democrats choosing to lean more centrist have denounced their party and are leaving it (which, by the way, is exciting news for the American people), President Donald Trump is fulfilling many of his promises and is putting people back to work, something Barack Obama (of the infamous hope and change rhetoric that got him in hot water) could never produce in America. Lost jobs have been brought back. That's right; the ones that Mr Hopey-Changey said would not come back. Guess what? They're back. President Trump is going to be in office through his first term and should easily be re-elected. Americans don't need socialism to reverse the good fortunes we have now. That referendum was shot down in November of '16. You can't possibly vote down a robust economy.

And what do Dems have to show for all of this? Punishing Californians for using a plastic straw while drinking liquids, thanks, but no thanks, to another unneeded stupid law. Pathetic.

The real winners were those who voted for Trump, including this writer. The real losers.... are those who didn't. Case closed.

Jeopardy host Alex Trebek is hinting about retirement. Again. He's released a video that's gone viral. Look, Alex, if you want to really retire from the show, just tell us that your mind is made up.

And no matter what successors may be rumored to replace Trebek, the show won't be the same. Just look at what The Price Is Right has become.

Roanoke, Texas, is inching closer to having its new City Hall building completed. It looks magnificent from the Oak Street perspective, what with the analog clock on top alerting patrons to what time it is. Other elements of Roanoke's new City Center project are underway, which will include multi-use development.

********

Stephen F. Austin, the father of Texas in your history books, is now under attack.............in his namesake city??? Afraid so. You won't believe what is on the minds of Austin city council members. A city name change. It's because of unnecessary political correctness, but you already know that, and it would easily have been your first guess.

Such would have to be subject to a vote by citizens, but I doubt that they'd be stupid enough to vote to change it altogether. Plus, this would mean overthrowing the city charter, and that wouldn't be very pretty.

Need a new car? I'm not far from needing one, but some of you out in computerland may need one right now. If so, then check out the latest and greatest at this link before you just go to your nearby dealership, and there's a lot of great stuff out there.

The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger just turned 75.

And he's still going, as if he were 35. No hint yet of his retirement. Perhaps even the aforementioned Alex Trebek will retire before Jagger.

That's it for now. Go enjoy some great golf, great tennis, and great.....well, you fill in the blank. Whatever makes you happy, just go do it.

And there you are.

Admitting that I don't keep up with politics as much as I should, perhaps, did CA ban straws? Just got back from there yesterday and drank out of a lot of those from various restaurants, ranging from large fast food chains to what I think was a sole proprietorship burger place in an outdoor food court area (sort of a take-off on the food truck concept, I guess). I had already been to the state since the plastic bag ban took place, so I was prepared for that.

(Spent most of the time there in a rural mountainous area, then spent one night in the so-called 909 region/Inland Empire to visit friends, and finally stayed a few nights in Orange County. Lots of bad-looking vegetation along freeways in the Southern part, but you probably figured that.)

Yeah, pretty much. Plastic ones, anyway. I guess those Calicommies would rather you get your drink all over your lap the next time some ice --- shall we say --- gives way.... Absolutely disgraceful law.

Read up on it. Looks like it's restricted to sit-down restaurants, and that they can only be provided at the request of the customer. Fast food places and coffee shops are exempt, I guess. Hadn't been signed as of two days ago. There are cities in CA that have their own laws that are stricter (none that I visited last month).

To me, the state is okay to visit on occasion, but you know the rest.

(In fairness, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it could be beforehand, particularly in the coastal Southern part. It had been three years since I had more a layover in that area, which consisted of a very rough landing in San Diego in '16, on the way to Reno.)

In other news, this looks like something:

First, the board approved adding what is being called the Falcon Steel property - between Avenue N and Avenue P, Second Street and Fourth Street - to the proposed PID boundaries. Plans for the Falcon Steel property, distributed at the meeting, show the mixed-use development will have a restaurant, retail, a hotel and residential lofts.
Location is north of the MSF.

Hat-tip to Lubbock in the Loop. Didn't know about the Avid Hotel on Ave. Q until a few days ago. Wonder if that's the one going in where the infamous Travelers Inn used to be, at Glenna Goodacre and Q?

That Travelers Inn site was supposed to be for a new Best Western, possibly a Plus. That proposal had disappeared from Lubbock In The Loop, so I'm not sure if the franchise still plans to use that site. If not, shoe, then perhaps, it will be the new Avid facility. Don't be surprised if Avid gets a location closer to Downtown, but still on Avenue Q. I haven't heard the official location.
