Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

I-69 Update: Progress Slow, And Funds Needed

Posted 06-25-2018 at 08:21 AM by case44

Never mind what Interstate 69's Texas Alliance website has suggested, in that it has not been updated in more than a year with some kind of headline. I know, for a fact, that there is road work going on in Texas on I-69's proposed path in a few places.

I was just in Houston, and some further progress has been made on signage. Still, however, much needs to be done there. Exhibit A is State Highway 242's approaches to the interstate in New Caney, where the new Grand Texas theme park is expected to open in July. Tourists will need to have those red, white, and blue assurance shields up to let them know they are approaching the highway and are about to get on it. Elsewhere, there's still confusion online about Nacogdoches' preferred I-69 routing. I've seen both stories, but there's some conflicting information about the final selection, whether it's a new western route around the town or an upgraded facility along the existing U.S. Highway 59. The same holds true for Lufkin, some 21 miles to the south, and that involves following U.S. 59 completely or taking a new southeast route from near U.S. 69 out of the city to connect to a Diboll relief route. Other projects supposedly going on are the Shepherd-to-Cleveland connection, work in Wharton County along the existing footprint, the Driscoll bypass near Corpus Christi, a five-mile stretch north of Raymondville in the Rio Grande Valley, and the 59 upgrade in Victoria.

Funds are still needed for upcoming projects in other locations. Texas voters have approved two funding sources in recent elections. That's something, but it's not enough. What I'm most anxiously awaiting is the connection from Texas into Louisiana along U.S. 84 and then some state highways in Louisiana. No new word on that just yet.

In the meantime, here's a link to an article from back in March, but it tells us where we're at now.
