Hats and Kentucky Derby Parties

I don't know how you feel about hats or Kentucky Derby parties, but I really like both. My first experience with the Kentucky Derby was in 1988 when I visited friends in Lexington. We went to Louisville with the goal of getting in to the Derby. Of course we knew we would be in the infield with a lot of other people. We wore shorts and t-shirts, no hats. After watching a number of well dressed ladies in amazing hats going in to occupy their box seats, we elected to watch the action in the comfort of a local bar. There we found a party going on and more amazing hats.
My next experience was last year at a private party. It gave me the opportunity to wear one of my vintage hats, a 1920s with a beautiful green ostrich feather. This year I will be attending a large party sponsored by a local group with proceeds going to charity. This, of course, was the perfect excuse to buy another hat. This one is a new "profiler." I made my selection at La France, a popular vintage clothing store in Ybor City. I had a lot of fun picking it out as the photos I am posting will attest. I chose the black and white with pheasant feathers. It won best dressed for me at a tea I attended recently.
For those of you still looking for a perfect hat, I recently discovered a hat designer in the historic Old Northeast section of St. Petersburg. The company is called Hat-A-Tude and there are 1200 hats on the website. I think that qualifies as something for everyone. So if you want to stand out at a summer wedding or a "Watch the Royal Wedding" party, wear a fabulous hat!

The Virginia Gold Cup is the same day. It's a grand affair if slightly smaller (only slightly). Dresses and hats are de rigueur. So are mint juleps.
My friend is there right now, in Warrenton, VA. I was there the past 2 years. Going to miss it this year. After, we would go watch the Derby on TV.
There's a Derby party at our local library and it sounds like fun with wine tasting "and bourbon".Posted 05-04-2018 at 07:47 PM by hunterseat -
