No agent, no upfront costs, no waiting on the off-chance that a reputable traditional publishing house might pick up the book.

All an author need do is write the book, get it beta read, make appropriate changes, get it properly edited and proofread (this will cost some money unless said author has an in-house editor/proofreader), make those changes, do a final read-through for continuity errors, format it in CreateSpace, and submit for publication. Pricing, ISBN assignment, payments, etc. are all handled through Amazon's system.

At the point that the author feels it's ready to publish, then author can also decide if the book will also be in Audible format. If so, that's extra work and does cost the author, but the various payments forms are easy to follow in Audible's system. The hard part is auditioning the narrator(s). Spousal Unit made a terrible mistake with first book. It gets great reviews for the story, terrible reviews for the narrator. Anyway, once the narrator has recorded the book to author's satisfaction, it also goes in for publication.

Best practice is to have all three formats ready to publish at the same time, for maximum income opportunity. And the percentage the author receives from these sales far exceeds the paltry 10-15% a publishing house offers.

Now the hard part: Author is responsible for getting the word out that this book is available for sale. An author page on Facebook is helpful, as is one on Twitter. Email your friends, co-workers, etc., and ask them to pass the word. Sign up on GoodReads, where they will also help you advertise, and get reviews.

This method of self-publishing is really the best way to go nowadays.
Very informative, thanks!
