Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

More Scattershooting / So Much For The $5 Billion Mile

Posted 04-15-2018 at 10:40 AM by case44

Warm greetings, once again, gentle readers! Guess who's back? And you know that it's time for more Scattershooting, where you get a potpourri of news, views, opinions, and other things that go into the soup of life. That's because life is what's covered in this chickenscratch, so let's gather around the computer campfire. Soup's on.

Okay, a show of hands now: How many people in Frisco, Texas, didn't see this coming? I bring up the fact that the new Wade Park development, designed to bring tons of high-end business, residence, amenities, hotels, shops, and eateries, was going to be an important piece of Frisco's $5 Billion Mile. Notice that I said was.

That's just it. Things have stalled.

The problem is the impending F word: foreclosure. Wade Park's developer, Thomas Land & Development, has a history of foreclosure and debt issues, and such is the case here as the big project has hit a snag. Doubts are cast over whether this project will ever get going or if someone else will ultimately take over this big chunk of land.

As it is, if you were to drive by the property, you'd see a few smaller buildings in a state of construction, along with one giant hole in the ground. But that's it. That's all you'd see in the interim. The $3 billion promise is turning into an expensive nightmare by the minute. While much went into the plans, and the drawings looked great, ambition took the place of realism. Suddenly, a vision outside of a developer's means becomes a mirage in the desert.

It had so much potential. It still could, but there's a bigger chance that this effort may end up far different from the one the original cats have drawn up. And those tenants that decided to pull out (and they were big ones) may not come back.

A special shout out goes to my niece, Julia, who turns 21 today! Happy birthday, tiger!

Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook is overreacting apparently. Broadcaster Brian Davis quipped about Westbrook's quest for averaging a triple double for the season, and all Davis had said was that Westbrook was out of his "cotton-pickin' mind" that he was averaging those numbers. Team officials were a little leery, however.

Good grief, people, just a get a life. People are going to speak that way, and that's the way it is. Hey, Russell, do us a favor: Shut up! Just play the game of basketball and quit worrying about how we speak. We're just talking basketball and you have good things happening in your game. Don't ruin it with political correctness. It's another thing Americans just don't need.

Prominent gay rights lawyer David Buckel decided it would be worth his while to just set himself on fire just to protest global warming. How looney-tunes can people get nowadays? So much crisis over something that doesn't exist and never has existed. He was 60.

So sad. A lost life for such a ridiculous and frivolous cause. I tell you, people are just sick....

Spring isn't spring without a little gardening for some folks. If your backyard isn't flat, then chances are good that you'll need to build some steps. The following link offers some really good ideas to get you started.

The Houston Astros are off to a slow start offensively this season. Hopefully, the fireworks will get going and be more consistent like most of last year. Thankfully, the pitching is keeping them afloat in some of these games. One thing we'll be watching is the progress of the Los Angeles Angels and their hot start to 2018. At this writing, the Angels are 12-3, and the 'Stros are 10-5. It's still early, y'all, but baseball is a funny game.

Speaking of the Astros, recent Masters champion Patrick Reed stopped by Minute Maid Park and checked out a World Series ring. The Houstonian also took in a game to watch his hometown team.

Obituaries of note include Art Bell, former host of radio's Coast-to-Coast AM. He was 72. The cause of death has not yet been determined. Every now and then, I used to get a kick out of his unusual style of show, which often dealt with the paranormal. In his world, I would be "East of the Rockies".

We turn now to a little relationship advice on Case's Column. There's a list floating around with the five things that either seal the deal or burst your bubble in a relationship.

Our link here shows exactly what they are:

President Donald Trump promised tax cuts for all Americans and got them. They're what he wanted. They're what the American people wanted. Problem is, some of us still haven't gotten our tax cuts in our paychecks yet and are still waiting. I'm confident that I will eventually get them, but you know I don't like waiting. We could have had these cuts in full by now if Congress hadn't piddled around last year. Congress can take the blame when people can't get what's promised to them in a timely fashion.

This writer, like many of you, is ashamed of Congress. Just because Trump is not a politician does not give a convenient excuse to not do what you were elected to do. Draining the swamp is not going to happen overnight. It probably won't completely happen in four years' time, but if enough conservatives would stand up and pledge to work with our duly-elected president, then we will see a big difference in how our great country will function in the coming years. Government, for what it's worth, still can't be trusted to do the right thing. And self-government still won't work without self-discipline.

The Miami Marlins baseball club is being outdrawn in attendance...........by one of their minor league affiliates! Wish I were kidding. None other than the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, who boasted an attendance at a recent game of 6,960 while, on the same day, the Marlins drew just 6,150. There's not just something fishy going on in Miami, but how does a team not draw fans in 75-degree weather? Well, for starters, did they really need for management to gut their roster?

Your writer has tentative plans to go watch the Texas Longhorns play some college baseball, hopefully as early as next Sunday. Weather has to cooperate for that to happen, and if it does, then a day trip to Austin is in the offing. What's not tentative is what I'll be doing just five days later, which is go back through Austin to get to San Antonio so I can spend two nights there. It's Fiesta time!

Several notable eating places that I enjoy are just awaiting my presence right now. Hang tight, guys, because The Case is coming at ya!

Have we gone too long without hearing about stupid criminals? Yes, and so, it's time for another story. Real-life, of course.

Criminal minds, you would think, would have the capacity to properly figure out how to block evidence from being seen. But, in the process, you also have to know how certain things work. Following is an account of a Massachusetts suspect who overlooked one very important thing.

May all of your fingerprints leave nothing but good marks all over the things you enjoy. Go out there and get high on life. You'll appreciate it later on.

And there you are.
