Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

New District Alignment Is Something Frisco Will Have To Get Used To

Posted 02-01-2018 at 07:30 PM by case44

Today just became the first day of the rest of your life if you're the Frisco (Texas) Independent School District. It will never be the same again from a community standpoint.

Well, you were warned months ago. This is what happens when you have a school district containing more than eight high schools, and this is the fruit it brings (or the poison, depending on your point of view). Ain't the Texas University Interscholastic League great? Nevertheless, all the changes from this latest shuffle are going to take getting used to. Reality has set in now. Pins, wall maps, and rubber bands, huh? Well, that was the UIL legend going in. Some will say they probably had some serious weed, as well, but we won't go there.

For you Friscoites who missed it, here's what things will look like in the next two years:

District 5-5AI

The Colony
Little Elm
Frisco Centennial
Frisco Heritage
Frisco Liberty
Frisco Independence
Frisco Lone Star
Frisco Wakeland

District 7-5AII

Denison
Denton Braswell
Lovejoy
Lake Dallas
Princeton
Frisco High
Frisco Reedy
Frisco Lebanon Trail
Frisco Memorial

This should be an interesting ride, sports fans. The former district listed will have eight teams and hardly any travel. Wakeland and Lone Star should be the best of the bunch in football, with The Colony, Independence, and Centennial making some noise. In the latter offering, it will be more challenging. Frisco High gets the three newest Frisco schools, and Reedy is already a favorite, having exploded onto the scene in football in its second varsity season, with less-established Lebanon Trail (which will come off two non-varsity years) and even-lesser-established Memorial (first year this fall) facing a big task. There will be travel in that district with Denison, and only two games to get ready for district. It's a nine-teamer in this one.

Ohhh, Frisco, better get used to this. You've come a very long way from a one-horse town. Now, you've got a big corral.

As always, the real shock value mostly involves schools west of 35 and those close to that interstate who have to travel three or more hours to get to those places.

Depending on the outcome of the scheduling of all the football games (at least two schools' schedules are already released), one of the downsides of this new alignment is that Frisco's oldest rivalry, Frisco High vs. Centennial, will have to put on hold for now. That's unless they play each other in non-district, but I haven't seen their revealed schedules yet. Bummer.

Now, it should also be noted that in all the other sports, all of the Frisco schools will be aligned in one district (I think it's District 9-5A).
