2017 And all That (Archived)

2016, was mostly awful on a personal level. Had it not being for meeting up with Jessica in the last couple of months of the year, I would have written it off as just a bad dream!
But it was good to spend Christmas with some of my old friends and relations back in South Africa. And having Jess with me, was an added bonus.
During my time there a friend wondered if I had considered "coming home" permanently! I couldn't give a straight anwer at the time, but it has been playing on my mind ever since.
It's been 15 years since I left Bloemfontein for England, and I have generally enjoyed my time here. But the more I think about that particular question, the more I am beginning to realise that perhaps I should go back!
Easier said than done of course. But that said, I recently quit my full-time job after 18 months in IT. So I am a free spirit employment-wise.
My parents still live in England, but I am sure they wouldn't object if I finally announced I wanted to go back to South Africa.
Same could be said with some of my friends and former work colleagues. Although they would probably argue England has far more going for it than a country that even today is still linked to apartheid and civil strife between poor blacks and rich whites.
I think had i not met Jessica when I did, i would have probably convinced myself to pack my bags, dig out my passport and bugger off!
As it is, she wants to very much stay in England. All of her family and friends are here, and it would be very wrong to ask her to come with me to a stranger country with strange people and a strange culture.
So unless anything happens between us, i will be keeping my feet firmly on English soil.
