Customer Service...or lack thereof

Posted 07-17-2008 at 08:49 PM by NoVaWaterproofer

Hi guys. I have to tell you, something's wrong. Something is really wrong with the way people are doing business with each other. More importantly something is really wrong with the way people are treating each other. In this presentation I am giving 3 examples where I personally have experienced a lack of customer service or just plain out-and-out rudeness and discourteousness. In each of these situations I have tried to tell it exactly like it was, word-for-word. I am not embellishing it just to try to make it a good story. I want you to see what happened and then I want to know whether you think I am irrational in my thinking or if there was a serious fault by the other party.
1) Scene – I am Maintenance Supervisor for Stuart Hill Apts. The owner and upper management are on me about getting a piece of roofing trim repaired that is high on one of our 3 story roof peaks. They do not want me to attempt a repair from ladder. They do want me to call a roofing company to come make the repair. I call several local companies and explain that it is a very small job but, a job that needs done nonetheless. I find a company that can do it and it is agreed that someone will stop by to make the repair within the next 2 weeks. 2 weeks pass and the repair is not made. I call the office to ask if they know when someone may be out. I am told that it should be sometime in the next week. After this week goes by I am told that we are having a property inspection and that it is imperative that this repair be made. I am asked by the Property Manager to call again. I make the call from the leasing office in front of the Property Manager so she knows the end result. Boy was she in for a surprise. Once again I speak to the receptionist and ask her when the repair might be made. As she starts to talk to me, in the background I hear these exact words from a male voice…"Is that that God d**n son-of-a-b**ch calling about that roof trim again? Let me talk to him". Now, at this point the hair on the back of my neck is standing up and I am ready to roll with this guy but I decide to wait and hear what he has to say without letting on that I heard his brief description of me. "Listen, I'm tired of you calling about…" That is about all I heard and I blocked him out. Unfortunately that day I lost my cool and said things in front of the ladies of the office staff that I would normally never say in front of ladies. I invited this guy on the phone to come to Stuart Hill right then and there and that I'd be standing at the entrance waiting for him if he wanted to talk face-to-face…man-to-man. For some odd reason he didn't think that would be necessary. I ended up talking the Property Manager into renting a lift and I did the repairs myself when Corporate wasn't going to be around.
2) Scene – Sterling Home Depot. I am going in to network a little, try to meet some folks, and post business cards for the new waterproofing business. I walk up to an employee working at a pricing cart near the back hallway. I stand there for several seconds before he acknowledges me and then I ask if they have a place where I can post some business cards. He tells me I need to speak to one of the managers and points to some doors down the hall telling me that's where I can find them. I walk down to the break room door and the same guy says, "The guy in the blue shirt". Ok. I wait until he finishes his conversation and walks back out of the room, then I ask him if he is one of the managers of the store. His reply was, "You don't see me, I'm not here right now". What in the world was that crap, especially coming from a store manager? I knew he had to be joking but he continued to walk away. I said something like, what do you mean. He said, "I'm on lunch right now". Again, I thought he was joking. He continued to walk with his back towards me and never turned around. Ok, hair standing up on back of neck…. I said what kind of manager are you that can't even answer a quick question from a customer? He turned around and said, "Look man, I've got my lunch in my hand, I'm trying to go eat now, it's my lunch". Now I can respect the fact that people deserve private time for lunch and need that 30 minutes or so to "get away" but I also thought as a manager you are always on duty. I know that's how I operated when I worked in Managerial roles. Anyway, I said he was ridiculous and I left.
3) Scene – Fridge starts having problems. I take front panel off of ice dispenser to see if there is a burnt relay on the controls or something of that nature. I leave the front panel off since I can't fix it and know a repairman will have to come in. We call a fairly reputable appliance company in our area. Repairman will be out at 10:30 on Wednesday. I call and ask if they can hold off until 10:45, as I will be finishing up a meeting at 10:30. No problem. Repairman calls at 9:30 Wednesday morning saying he's on his way. Jenn answers phone and tells him she is leaving and I am not home until 10:45. He says, "Oh, no one's home now". Well, no not really. He does not say goodbye, he does not say thank you, and he simply hangs up. (I found all this out after the fact) Ok, I'm home at 10:38. Doorbell rings. I answer door and here stands a guy with a few hand tools in his hands. He looks disgusted to be there and does not say a word. He doesn't announce who he is or say good morning or say go to h*ll or anything. I do say hi, how are you doing. Nothing. I tell him to come on in while I put the dog away. I once again say, how are you doing? He says, "Ok, who tore this apart" all in the same breath. I tell him I did. He literally shakes his head and throws his hands up in there air and says, "I'm not gonna work on it". Now being a maintenance man most of my adult life, I can certainly understand that you don't want someone else to try to fix something, tear it into 100 pieces and then call you to figure it out. But I had removed 2 screws and pulled the front panel off. It would be like me opening the hood for a mechanic to work on my engine. Anyway, he turned around and walked off. Not another word. No, thanks anyway, no sorry about your bad luck…. nothing. Next goes the hair on the back of my neck. I follow him to the door and I say, "What kind of business are you running here"? His reply…"I'm running an appliance repair business (fair enough in my opinion) and don't want people like you that don't know anything about it tearing sh*t up all the time". I bit my tongue and then said, "Ok, have a great day sir". I may have thrown a little bit of sarcasm into that response but at least I stayed calm. I immediately called the company office and asked what tech they had sent out to me. It was the owner of the company!

I know what you mean, people seem to think they are doing you a favor by you doing business in thier places of employment or useing their service co. I've tried to get a roofer to my house for a new roof.I've called at least 6 places and none have called me back. In stores most employees are much to busy to even answer a simple question. I think you are justified to feel as you do. My opinion is also, theres something very wrong.

You explain the situations very well and convincingly. It is not just you; I am sure that everyone who reads your anecdotes could add their own....some major and some minor.... this morning I was thinking the same thing when I greeted the young lady at the super market register with a cheery "Good Morning" she didnt acknowledge me and started ringing up my order.....since I had bakery bags I tried to make conversation to tell her what I had from the bakery...she didnt acknowledge this but obviously heard me as she rang it up...she filled my bags and went back to staring vacantly in space and adjusting her hair.

I wanted to go to the front desk and ask them is that what is passing for customer service; but was afraid they wouldn't even understand. Service is a thing of the past in many stores and businesses. Not all, but many.

YOU SHOULD COME TO THE UK !!! Think customer service is bad in the US. You may have your eyes well and truly opened if you pay us a visit in England. Some people are very helpful and as a tourist in London, people will go out of their way to help you if you are lost, so it is not all doom and gloom. HOWEVER, the levels of customer service in shops is very poor. I have been treated terribly on many occasions and it infuriates me. It has infuriated me to the point where I have done a very unenglish thing and complained. These people have no standards and lack self control and the strength of character to put aside any problems they may have and put them to one side and behave in a professional manner. These people do not have a clue how to behave and there are so many of them it is frightening. My ethos is; Remain Calm, Go to the very top to complain ( I have had a positive result every time I have done this) and make sure you spread the word far and wide about the company in question and its low standard of customer care. Even if you do not get a result, at least you have made a stand.
