Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

My Two Cents About The Realignment Rumor Mill

Posted 12-08-2017 at 04:15 PM by case44

When a school district has more than eight high schools in it, you have to expect a little controversy when change is in the offing. We stand two months away from the biennial University Interscholastic League realignment for athletics, and as always, the rumor mill gets a-flurry with much activity.

This next round could be the most intriguing ever in Texas history. Class 5A is going to feature two tiers based on enrollment, Division I and Division II. Instead of the idea I have previously shared, with the eight oldest high schools in Frisco, Texas (Frisco High, Centennial, Liberty, Wakeland, Independence, Reedy, Heritage, and Lone Star), competing in one district, and two new schools, Lebanon Trail and Memorial, competing in another. Don't think we'll get that, sports fans.

The UIL is considering having Centennial, Lone Star, Liberty, Wakeland, Heritage, and Independence in tier Division I, with the higher enrollments, competing, potentially, alongside Little Elm and The Colony. Then they'd have Frisco High paired with Lebanon Trail, Reedy, and the soon-to-be-opened Memorial in a Division II (lower enrollment) scenario and competing with.....well, we don't know yet. Not exactly the greatest situation, but one which might make sense where the UIL is concerned. This, obviously, would take away from the rivalries which Frisco had tried to build in recent years. And Frisco High and Centennial have the district's longest rivalry going, so you hate to see that one broken up.

Expect many to be displeased by this possible move, even though it's really not official yet. No word on whether there will be an appeal from Frisco officials. By the time that ol' groundhog emerges from underground in early February, we will know the truth about the future of Frisco sports. This is part of the growing pain in a district already loaded. Frisco was comfortable, albeit very briefly, with the perfect district setup. With two new campuses coming (and certainly two to three more within ten years), fans need to expect lots of change and lots of wiggling.

Just think: Groundhog Day, National Signing Day, and UIL realignment. They all happen in the same week. First week of February is only six weeks away!
