Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting Again / Let The (Potato) Chips Fall Where They May

While we stand in glad anticipation for a turkey to be carved somewhere near you, warm felicitations to all for this, another Scattershooting. As it's two weeks until our annual fowl play, you'd probably want to peek at what it's taking to get you there.

I stopped by a local grocery store in the very hopes that I would pick up some Reser's scalloped potatoes in the frigid confines of said grocer. Well, this writer took a look, and all they had were Reser's hash brown casserole and Reser's macaroni and cheese. Even worse than that were the expiration dates of the products.

November 5?

October 28???

What in the cornbread world were those products still doing on the grocer shelves, knowing full well that consumers can no longer use them? Sometimes, we've just got to let the chips fall where they may when life doesn't deal you the right cards. All this writer wanted was scalloped potatoes to fix with his pork tenderloin. Because of spoiled products, I decided to settle on some Bob Evans macaroni and cheese. Well, let's face it: Potato chips probably would have been inappropriate outside of the prospect of tomorrow's lunch at work.

You'd think that grocery workers would be more cognizant of taking products off the shelves when it's time to do so.

Houston needs more than just Astros World Series memorabilia, T-shirts, and commemorative magazine covers (and there will be plenty of all of that this offseason), but don't you think that the Astros radio network can put together a Steve Sparks big call collection? If they can't for YouTube, then they need an audio collection. Sparks is the guy who gets real excitable on the radio when an Astros player gets an improbable catch or guts out an extra-base hit or hits a home run to change a deficit into a lead.

They really should. Makes you want to open your ears more during the offseason while you wait impatiently for the next season to begin.

We've had another passing in the entertainment world. Remember the old ABC-TV show, "Benson"? It's star, Robert Guillaume, passed away at 89 about two weeks ago. Benson was one of my favorite TV sitcoms of my junior high years, and I couldn't wait for it to come on. Guillaume also starred in "Soap", which preceded the spinoff Benson.

Very funny man, too. We will all miss his talents.

Getting increasingly tiresome are these ridiculous protests NFL players are making at these football games during our National Anthem. Are they accomplishing anything constructive?? No. It's mostly a group of African-American players, and all they're doing is airing out their grievances for the sake of "social injustice". Look here: I don't give a &^%@ about these players' grievances. Our precious Old Glory and our sacred National Anthem are not forums for people's grievances. Players, get your asses off the ground, stand up, face the flag, put your hand over your heart, sing, and just shut up already! Your sport is losing TV ratings and local attendance because of your petty sickery. If you're going to whine about "social injustice", then you need to find another place to do that. The arenas where we'd rather watch football are not the appropriate places.

And as for the commissioner, Roger Goodell, I've lost respect for you because you let this travesty drag out. The sport that's supposed to bring people together has become the sport that's turned people away, this sport called football. Roger Goodell, you need to resign from your post. Today. America is bigger than any one individual, any sport, any dream, and any agenda. It's the greatest nation in this world. But you, Roger Goodell --- or should that be Baddell? --- you and your suddenly-sorry league don't seem to think so. Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are right. The NFL has become a leftist league. How sad! Roger Baddell should be ashamed of himself. We should all call for his resignation from his dubious spot as commissioner of a once-great league.

Speaking of football, I watched some high school action in Frisco, Texas, last week, as Reedy High was taking on Lone Star at Frisco Memorial Stadium. Glad I was on the home side for the game. That's because the visiting side had a water main break in the restrooms, rendering them unusable. Such a shame, considering that the visiting side had the highest attendance of the season at Memorial.

********

And even more football, with the Cleveland Browns making a celebration of a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals to get quarterback A J McCarron. Well, the Browns officials shouldn't have been celebrating until after they were to call the league office to confirm the deal. Yes, they forgot to call the league office.

Oops!!

As a result, no trade. Cleveland fans still suffer. Maybe Roger Baddell was out playing a little golf.

In Frisco, meanwhile, two high school bands have advanced past University Interscholastic League Area competitions and have moved on to the State Marching Contest in San Antonio, currently going on at this writing.

Congrats are in line for Wakeland High School (fifth appearance in school history) and Lone Star High School (its first).

Partly personal, and because I decided to visit a particular church not too long ago. I used to go to that church many years ago and had a few friends there. In recent years, I'd moved on, but I felt that that church had some potential for big-time growth, with families and singles coming in to be part of that church's undertaking. Such never happened, and because that congregation did not have a vision for that church's future, my impromptu visit (during which I decided to keep a low profile) to that venue made me see something that didn't surprise me in the least. That Sunday morning service had more senior adults than younger folks. I did not see many families or any young kids. Singles? Hardly. There were a few familiar faces along the way from all those years ago. But the majority of people I saw there were senior adults, not exactly the future of any church. It's sad how a lack of vision and no clear-cut plan can turn a harvest into dust.

So, the next time any of you visit Lamar Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, you'll know exactly what to look out for.

Can hockey return to Houston? New Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta of Landry's Seafood and Saltgrass fame hopes to make it happen, as he'd like to make Houston an NHL bid. It's too early to see if they'll vie for an expansion team or try to lure an existing one. Through the years, the city had had numerous hockey leagues represented with the teams they've had, but have never had the NHL. It's time.

Houston Apollos? That has a nice ring to it.

********

Funny thing happened at work late last week. I parked in my usual parking space at work, and my car's odometer read exactly 170,000 miles. How about that?

No, it's not time yet for a new car. I'll probably get another year or two out of the one I have. Still in fantastic shape.

********

Hope everybody has a splendiferous Thanksgiving and all the wishes you've looked for to be granted to you. Yes, even you, Roger Baddell....

And there you are.

Not sure if this is a good idea, but I wonder if the ACC (college) commissioner John Swofford might consider going to the NFL. He has seemingly unified that conference like no other commissioner has, and got all the members to sign their grant of rights agreement until 2035 (Big 12's only lasts until '24).

It should be noted that Wakeland's band finished fourth at the Texas UIL State Marching Contest for the third time in school history. Other years, they placed fifth and eighth. Great job, Tanner Smith and company!
