Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Fertitta Knows What He's Doing --- With More To Come

Posted 10-22-2017 at 12:02 PM by case44

Around Texas, when it comes to entrepreneurship, Tilman Fertitta is the man. In case you haven't heard of him, he's the guy who owns Landry's Restaurants and its subsidiaries (which include Saltgrass Steakhouse, one of my personal favorites) and who has made a successful transformation of San Antonio's Tower of the Americas, previously a decaying dump, but now, a beautiful swan and a true tourist attraction.

The Galveston native and Houston fixture just wins, and everything he touches turns to gold. So, I applauded when he decided to buy the Houston Rockets NBA franchise away from Leslie Alexander. Great move for Tilman, and great for the league. We'll see if it translates into more wins and building a sustainable winner in Houston. Given the recent success of the Astros in baseball, there's no reason to think that the Rockets can't have similar success. He did spend time in the Rockets organization during the mid-1990s. You remember that time, don't you? Sure you do. Those were the years the Rockets won it all.

For all the great things he's done, I can only admire Fertitta for creating fabulous restaurants, overseeing successful projects such as the Kemah Boardwalk, and making things better for a lot of people. I mean, I admire the guy, wishing I could have been half the guy he is. To me, that is a true achiever.

He's been a big name in business and even bigger with restaurants. There's simply nothing he can't do. Word going around now is that he's trying to bring the NHL to Houston. Don't know if you've heard that.
