Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Astros: Kansas City '15 Revisited Or Miracle?

Posted 10-20-2017 at 04:17 PM by case44

So, the questions come to mind. Which Houston Astros team will show up tonight in Houston? Yeah, we're not at Yankee Stadium anymore, but so what? Anyway, which team will the Astros bring tonight: the one that has had some great comeback performances like the ones they had against the Boston Red Sox in the American League divisional series (and other games), or the one that still gets into funks, costing them golden opportunities?

A. J. Hinch, the Astros' manager who has had a lot of things go right for him this year, is very confident that his team will come around. He's got balls not to jinx his team, but he is a believer.

These same Astros let a golden opportunity slip by them..............badly.................this past Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. They had a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning, only for the Astros' bullpen to cough it up and to lose them the game, 6-4. Shades of Kansas City, if you recall. You remember that ALDS series from 2015? Game 4 in Houston? Yes, this was at home, against a very good Kansas City Royals team which eventually won the World Series. The Astros had taken a 6-2 lead into the eighth inning of that game, only for that Astros supposedly-stellar bullpen to give up five runs in that inning. Houston would lose by a score of 9-6, and they never recovered from it the next night, losing the ALDS to KC.

Fast-forward back to tonight. Houston has not had the same offensive magic in this ALCS as it had in the ALDS. The New York Yankees haven't been that great on the road, either. At least, the Astros get to play Game 6 at home where they can try to produce a miracle. Had they won Game 4, who knows what end result we might have had in Game 5? As it is, Houston could have had a clinching game in Game 6 had one of those two games been won. But even Dallas Keuchel was the losing pitcher Wednesday. It's up to Justin Verlander to be a hero on this night. Maybe he will be. Maybe someone else on the Astros will be. Maybe neither. This Yankee team is every bit as capable of winning and capping off a series as any. But this Astros team has also done some big things and are also capable. Home teams for Games 6 and 7 have pulled off winning the final two before, and while that's not completely guaranteed, you never know.

Just stay tuned. The Astros will have to prove this evening that they belong in the Fall Classic, given all the events they've dealt with this year, good or bad. Even if they do somehow win tonight and play Game 7 and win that, then such could qualify as a minor miracle, if that's what you want to call it. Nonetheles, it's their finest hour, the scene tonight at Minute Maid. As the slogan has said for the club all year long, these guys will have to "earn it".

Astros get the pennant! Astros get the pennant!

First time as AL members, the Houston Astros win a pennant. First time since ought-5 (back in the NL). It's time. It's our time.

They just need a miracle tonight, and it will be tough. What they'll have to avoid is getting their backs to the wall when they arrive in L A. And hopefully, they know that.
