Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

They Were Further Along With This Than I Thought

This writer decided it was time for a brief road trip. I was in no way about to let gas prices or tight money get it the way. Even though I will have an actual vacation in less than four weeks, there's no way I could resist.

Basically, it's this road junkie in me that had to. So, this morning at daybreak, I was off and running. Central Texas was the place this time, and Interstate 14 was the road taken. Why? Because the road's assurance markers were up alongside the roadway. Looking good. Some of the feeder road lengths and approaches had the new signage, most of it in Killeen. Overhead freeway signs had the new emblazonings in their proper places. But there was a surprise.

Yes, sports fans, there, indeed, was. This road warrior saw mile markers and exit numbers already up on Interstate 14 (old U.S. Highway 190, recently rechristened). They're already up on most of the exits. As for the mile markers, number 301 appears at the interchange with I-35 in Belton. This means that the measuring point is from the interchange of I-10 and U.S. 190 in West Texas. Now, we don't know yet how the final routing will be or what the designations will be should the highway branch out into two legs west of Brady, Texas, as officials have speculated. The U.S. 190 portion would constitute the south leg, but if the mile marker setup is any indication, then it's assumed that the south leg will take on mainline status, unlike I-69 and its three Texas legs.

Don't get me wrong, folks. It was refreshing to see action done, and done so quickly, with the existing portion. For TXDOT, that's good, but there's still much to be done. My trip, however brief, needed to be longer, but I had to get back home to do some things. The weather cooperated, I got some good pictures, and even tasted good barbecue in Belton. You could say that today was satisfying, even if it really wasn't long enough.

----

Side note: I tried out Schoepf's Barbecue in Belton (It's pronounced Shuff's). Wonderful brisket and venison sausage, plus pinto beans and delicious cheesy potatoes. My only gripe was that the portions were too small. But this place gets my vote for best barbecue in Belton, Temple, and Killeen.
