WIW, my experience with I. latifolia is that it needs LOTS of summer water---even here on the cool (but dry) summer Oregon coast so possibly best planted in an irrigated lawn area with afternoon shade in Reno? "wilsonii" (a hybrid of the "English Holly" and a species from Madeira (an island in the Atlantic off the coast of North Africa) is a very nice tree but sometimes hard to find in nurseries lately and possibly more drought tolerant once established than latifolia which comes from summer-wet "monsoonal" climate of Japan. a "sister" from the same cross as "wilsonii" called "camellifolia" has done very well without extra summer irrigation here in Bandon, Oregon. vomitoria, glabra, and pedunculosa being from humid summer climates would also need or at least greatly appreciate a fair amount of summer water at least for the first few years in warm dry summer areas like Reno. hope this is of some interest and/or help.
