Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Gas Shortage, Huh? I'm Not In A Panic

Last Wednesday, things were pretty normal, even though gas prices were creeping up. Your writer made a visit to the gas pump and filled it up whenever the need was there. And it's a good thing I did.

Because Thursday was a different story.

You know the latest news by now, what with half of this nation's gas stations suddenly not having any fuel for the pumps, thanks to Hurricane Harvey's torrential rains at refineries in Houston and Beaumont, Texas. Only then were people really feeling the effects from the big storm. During this brief problem, I had a plan to top off my tank a few days thereafter while everybody else was in full panic mode. In my area, I just took a trip to my nearest Buc-ee's and had no problems during the crisis. Two visits and neither of them with a long wait, and the second visit, earlier this morning, had no waiting at all. Yeah, the tank was getting down to half a tank, so I just needed to top it back off.

That's not panic in my book, folks. It's just heads-up preparation and common sense. We'll get over this mini-crisis soon. I know it's an inconvenience, but we're still a resilient country.

Filled up before the storm and have tried to keep my driving to a minimum since, so I haven't had to visit a station lately. (Helps to have a small car.) Will probably need to soon since I have to go across town tomorrow (may be a 30-mi round trip). Not looking forward to that.
