Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Astros Will Play Home Games In St. Pete For Now

There's nothing like baseball to bring people together. In most instances, that is the case. But there's also nothing like tragic weather conditions that also bring folks together. As people in Texas and across the nation deal with a horrible, tragic storm like Hurricane Harvey has become, we've seen the very best in Americans displayed when there's a crisis. Baseball has become secondary to the needs of those who are trying to ride out the storms in Southeast Texas. More on that in an upcoming post.

The Houston Astros will play baseball against the Texas Rangers. Just won't be in Houston, that's all. Flood conditions are such that you can't get to Downtown Houston via any of their freeways. Officials have determined that the series with the Rangers will be at Tropicana Field in St Petersburg. The Astros may have to also play at a neutral site for their weekend series against the New York Mets, and that location has not really been decided yet. At any rate, the team won't be back home until September 14, after what will become an 18-game road trip.

As good as the Astros had been on the road until recently, wouldn't it be something if the team, despite its rash of injuries, came out with a red-hot winning streak? If they can somehow pull off a winning record at "home" and for the scheduled road games, then it could set a positive tone for the post-season and wind up the feel-good story of the year.

Astros will be playing in Houston this weekend. Hallelujah! And they've got Justin Verlander on the way.
