Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

More Central Texas Tastes Coming To North Texas

Where the title is concerned, well, that's the best I can do to describe what I'm about to describe. In years past, people in the Dallas-Fort Worth area have seen an influx of Central Texas-style barbecue moving to new restaurants in the Metroplex. Area residents have seen Rudy's Country Store & BBQ make inroads here, and locally-inspired aficionados have brought the Lockhart influence in two locations of Lockhart Smokehouse. And that's not to mention one local outlet, Hutchins BBQ, expanding to a Frisco location a few years ago, spinning off the longtime McKinney eatery.

Oh, and there will be more coming. Who's next, you ask?

Salt Lick Barbecue is next.

The Austin chain's developers are planning to build a brand-new outlet in Grapevine, amid new mixed-use development amongst the trees near a creek. It's over by Grapevine Mills Mall, but it sure won't be too far away for this poster. They say a 2018 opening is expected for this.

Now, Salt Lick does have a kiosk at D/FW International Airport. So, how come I haven't gone to that location? Because it's post-9/11 and said kiosk is over by the airline gates, past the security checkpoint. Besides, airport officials don't have time for people who just goof off inside a terminal and aren't getting on a plane. That's why. I have, however, gone to the two Austin-area locations, Round Rock and Driftwood. Both are fabulous and offer fabulous food. Great smoked meats with good sides and a mustard-based sauce. In addition, Austin does have a third Salt Lick, but it's a kiosk at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. I won't elaborate the same reasons I couldn't go to that location even if I wanted to.

It's a year away, North Texas. Get ready for a Central Texas legend hitting our turf on what will be a gravel parking lot (Environmental-related reasons; don't ask me why), and the surrounding area should be somewhat scenic. It won't, however, be isolated. And it won't be far away from my humble abode, so I won't need to go to Round Rock for the mustard-based taste made famous in Austin.

In case you've never been, here's a link to Salt Lick's website.

I'm going to try to resist making sudden trips to Round Rock within the next year. Yeah. We'll see how long that lasts. I am considering, possibly, a trip to Austin this coming winter. Stay tuned; don't hold me to it just yet.
