Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

I-69 Update: Signs Updated Inside Houston's Loop

I just got back from Houston after an overnight trip, but during which, I got an opportunity to check out the stretch of Interstate 69 inside of Loop 610. The process of putting in new signs on the feeders, side street approaches, and overhead signs is ongoing. Some of those updates are already in place, either with fresh signage or with emblazoned print superimposed over the old signs.

Progress is the order of the day here, and significantly since my last visit here. On the ground, the I-69 logos marking the through lanes of the freeway have also been painted. Another feature that Houstonians are seeing here that hasn't been done outside the loop is the appearance of exit numbers. Those have been added to the guide signs. Also, a new variation of Texas' new gore sign style appears along this stretch. It features something often seen in other states, where two lines were used for text. Texas had previously used gore signs with the exit numbers on top of said signs, and that went on for many years. In the last two years, the state decided to change their criteria for gore signs, and the first changes utilize a three-line concept, making the signs big. You'd see the word EXIT, then the exit number below it, and the arrow below that. In a two-line concept, you'd have EXIT on top, and then the number and directional arrow on the second line. The latter is currently on display in Houston, and they haven't even seen the three-line format yet because other areas in Texas have used it first but hadn't made its way to Southeast Texas. Nonetheless, with the exit numbers, it appears that designs for the entire I-69 route from Victoria into Houston are completed, and some of that is under construction now.

Even still, a lot of work is still yet to be done in Houston. A scant few overhead signs still have not received logo updates, but they should be imminent at any time now. Progress is being made, but it's slow to come.
