It must have been years ! There is absolutely nothing nice about a drive to or from Austin!
The folks who routinely make that trip use 281 and the next available Austin access east/west! It is faster than I-35! The traffic between San Marcos and Austin is like driving from Huntsville to Galveston via Houston! The term horrible does not begin to describe I-35!

A trip to the local main library would be a better start. Some local libraries have outstanding " historical" Yellow Pages.
